Valence Overview

As part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Valence is a commune in the Drôme department in southeastern France. It is located near the left bank of the Rhône, about 100 kilometers south of Lyon, along the railway line from Paris to Marseille.

In 2018, it had 64,726 registered inhabitants (132,556 in the urban area (unité urbaine), the eighth largest city in the region. There are four cantons in the town, and Valentinois are its residents.

Location

Valence is a mandatory passageway between Paris and the Mediterranean Sea due to its location. In the center of the Rhone Valley on the meridian axis, the city lies at the end of the Isère Valley (path to the Alps), in the western part of the historic province of Dauphiné, in the Valentinois natural and historical region, and on the border between Ardèche and Ardèche (by the Rhone). To the west and east of the city are several mountain ranges, including the Massif Central and the Ardèche hills.

Hydrography

The commune of Valence lies on the left bank of the Rhône river. In addition, the city is crossed by one of its tributaries: the Épervière [fr], a 2.6-km-long river formed by joining most of the city’s channels.

Climate

The Rhône corridor in Valence has a humid subtropical climate characterized by a wind that blows almost continuously. Known as the “mistral” from the north, it brings cool weather in the summer but cold weather in the winter. Stormy disturbances are usually announced by it when it comes from the south. For some people, especially in the summer, it is called le vent du midi or le vent des fous because it makes the atmosphere uncomfortable.

Communication and transport

Gare de Valence-Ville, located just south of the town center, is Valence’s central railway station. Many regional destinations are accessible from the station, including Lyon, Grenoble, Avignon, Gap, and others. As part of the LGV Méditerranée high-speed rail line that extends south from Valence to Marseille, the Gare de Valence TGV opened in 2001. Located just one kilometer south of the LGV Rhône-Alpes end, Valence has much shorter journey times to northern destinations, with a journey to Paris taking only 2h11. In the northeastern part of the city, there is a TGV station.

A bike-sharing scheme called Libélo began operating in March 2010, offering 200 long-term bicycles for rent and 180 short-term bicycles for rent at 18 locations in the city. Credit cards or smart cards are used to collect charges.

Public transport

A bus network called Citéa serves the Valence agglomeration (located across the departments of Drôme and Ardèche) and the romano-peageoise town (about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Valence).

Railway

A total of two SNCF stations are located in Valence. (Gare)

Air

In the commune of Chabeuil, Valence-Chabeuil Airport is co-managed by the General Council of the Drôme and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Drôme. With the decision of the Valence-Paris service, which has been operating since 1969, it is now open to national commercial traffic, private aircraft, IFR, and VFR but welcomes regular routes.

Self-service bicycles

The city has had a self-service bicycle rental and long-term hire system called Libelo since 28 March 2010. Valence, Guilherand-Granges, and Bourg-lès-Valence include 160 bikes on the Smoove key concept spread across 18-20 stations and 200 rental bikes for long periods.

History

The demonym for Valence is Valentinois, but “Valentinois” also refers to a geographical area and an old French province whose capital Valence, was originally part of Dauphine.

Valence comes from the Latin valentia, which means “strength or capacity.” Before the Roman conquest, the city was known as Valentia Julia, the capital of the Segalauni. It was an important town of Viennensis Prima under Valentinian I and became a colony under Augustus. It may have been the seat of a bishopric as early as the 4th century.

The Romans lost control of Valentia in the 5th century: in 413, the Goths under Ataulf besieged and captured Sebastianus, the brother of Jovinus, at Valentia on behalf of Honorius. As a result of the Roman occupation of Valentia in 440, the Alans, led by Sambida, received vacant lands. The Burgundians were settled in the region by Aetius under King Gondioc three years later. From 473 to 493, Chilperic II ruled Valence before his brother Gundobad slew him. The Frankish king Clovis married Chilperic’s daughter Clotilde in 493. Childebert I, the son of Clovis, attacked the Burgundians in 534, adding their territory to the Frankish Kingdom. After that, the city was successively ruled by the Franks, the Arabs of Spain, the sovereigns of Arles, the emperors of Germany, the counts of Valentinois, the counts of Toulouse, as well as its bishops, who struggled to maintain control of the city they had won in the fifth century. The pope united the bishoprics of Die and Valentinois in 1275 to strengthen their hand against the counts of Valentinois.

Toponymy

Rhône corridor became a central north-south communication axis when Julius Caesar conquered Gaul, linking the new Roman possessions around the Mediterranean Sea. Segovellaunes territory was home to many settlements, including Valentia, a Latin name meaning La Vaillante, La Vigoureuse.

Demography

In 2018, 64,726 people were living in the municipality. The agglomeration contained 132,556 people (10 communes, including 3 in Ardèche), and the metropolitan area included 254,254 people (71 communes across Drôme and Ardèche).

Health

A public hospital and a private hospital are located in Valence. In addition to 58 physicians, 67 nurses, and 80 physiotherapists, the commune is home to many health professionals. Through its commitment to promoting good nutrition practices, Valence has also been active in the National Programme of Health and Nutrition (PNNS) since 2009.

Economy

The focal point of major north-south European routes and door to the Sillon Alpin for the east-west corridor in the direction of Italy and Switzerland, the Valence agglomeration has developed around innovative companies, a higher education system, centers of excellence, and economic land supply. Valence’s economy benefits from its proximity to Lyon and Geneva and significant European capitals via transport routes.

Additionally, Valence has a wealth of producer territory for food processing, high-tech with significant electronics and aerospace groups, many innovative small and medium-sized businesses, and a vital university center for film and knowledge with influential animation studios internationally renowned for their quality.
