Valenciennes Overview

France’s Nord department includes Valenciennes, a commune in Hauts-de-France.

A river called the Scheldt (French: Escaut) runs through it. Between 1975 and 1990, the city and region experienced a steady population decline but have since rebounded. According to the 1999 census, Valenciennes had a population of 41,278, while the metropolitan area had a population of 39,677.

History

A legal document by Clovis II (Valentina) mentions Valenciennes for the first time in 693. As a result of the 843 Treaty of Verdun, it became a neutral city between Neustria and Austrasia. By the end of the 9th century, the Normans had overrun the region, and the town passed to them in 881. It passed to the Holy Roman Empire-dependent Duchy of Lower Lotharingia in 923. After the establishment of the Frankish Empire, the city began to develop, though the archaeological record still needs to reveal everything about this period. Valenciennes became the center of marches along the Empire’s border under the Ottonian Empire.

A terrible famine brought about the Plague in 1008. Tradition has it that the Virgin Mary surrounded the city with a cordon, which miraculously protected its people from the disease. Since then, the Valenciennes have walked the 14 km (9 mi) road around the town every year, known as the tour of the Holy Cordon. After 1070, many counts became counts of Hainaut, first as counts of Valenciennes.

At a General Chapter of the Dominican Order held in Valenciennes in 1259, Thomas Aquinas established a ratio studiorum or program of study for the Dominican Order [10] that featured the study of philosophy as an innovation for those not sufficiently trained to study theology with masters Bonushomo Britto, Florentius, Albert, and Peter. A Dominican scholastic philosophy evolved from this innovation, for example, in 1265 at the Order’s studium provinciale at the convent of Santa Sabina in Rome, from which the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas would emerge, Aquinas, Angelicum.

By 1285, the currency of Hainaut had been replaced by the money of France: the French écu. Besides many corporations in Valenciennes, many convents developed outside its walls, such as the Dominican convent (whose church was excavated by the Valenciennes Archaeological Service in 1989 and 1990).

A bell is still rung in honor of Our Lady of the Holy Cordon in the Tower of Dodenne, built by Albert of Bavaria in the 14th century. Valenciennes, a part of Hainault, lost its autonomy when it was re-attached to Burgundy in the 15th century. As well as Georges Chastellain, Jean Molinet, Simon Marmion, Pierre du Préau, and Jérôme de Moyenneville, Valenciennes had several famous sons during this period: the chronicler Georges Chastellain, the poet Jean Molinet, and the goldsmith Jérôme de Moyenneville).

Climate

The Köppen climate classification for Valenciennes is Cfb (oceanic climate). A typical annual temperature in Valenciennes is 11.0 degrees Celsius (51.8 degrees Fahrenheit). There is an average of 694.1 mm (27.33 in) of rain per year, with December being the wettest month. A typical July temperature is 18.7 °C (65.7 °F), and a standard January temperature is 3.9 °C (39.0 °F). On 25 July 2019, Valenciennes recorded its highest temperature of 40.9°C (105.6°F); the coldest was 14.9°C (5.2°F) on 7 January 2009.

Economy

Lace has historically been a renowned product of Valenciennes, and the primary industries were steel and textiles until the 1970s. Reconversion attempts have focused primarily on automobile production since their decline, and Toyota built an assembly line near Valenciennes called Onnaing in 2001 for the Toyota Yaris. As a result of these changes and others, the region’s unemployment rate is now lower than the national average.

Public transport

The first line of the Tramway de Valenciennes was inaugurated on 3 July 2006. This 9.5 km (5.9 mi) tramway connects five communes for 242.75 million euros in the Valenciennes Metropolitan area.

Valenciennes railway station is a great place to start your journey, with connections to Lille, Paris, and several regional cities.

Sport

There is a football club in the city called Valenciennes F.C.

What is Valenciennes known for?

The artistic talent of Valenciennes led it to be known as the Athens of the North (Northern France), underscoring its creative influence.

What is Valenciennes famous for?

Located just north of Belgium’s border, Valenciennes is known as the “Athens of the North” because of its culture and creativity. For hundreds of years, French culture has been shaped by painters, sculptors, and architects from this relatively small place.

Best Things to Do in Valenciennes (France)

Musée des Beaux-Arts

Valenciennes’ fine arts museum is a gem in a city that has long been known for its culture. It opened in 1801, displaying works by the Academy of Painting and Sculpture, and today is filled with pieces by French, Flemish, and Dutch masters.

Fosse Dutemple

Like much of the eastern Nord region, Valenciennes lies above rich coal seams that were first exploited in the 18th century. Today, almost all evidence of the industry has disappeared since the 20th century.

Watteau Monument

Located on the Rue de Paris just behind the Church of Saint-Géry, this small garden has a fountain with a statue of Watteau. The artist stands on a decorative plinth with muses and scrolls, holding a paintbrush and palette.

Place d’Armes

Located in the center of Valenciennes, Place d’Armes is the hub of political and commercial activity. You’ll be captivated as soon as you see the striking town hall.

Église Saint-Géry

Listed as a French Historical Monument, it was built for the Franciscan Order in the first half of the 12th century. Adding the bell tower to the building in the 1800s made some changes.

Maison Espagnole

Valenciennes was under the Spanish Netherlands’ rule between the 16th and 17th centuries. Construction of the handsome timber-framed Maison Espagnole took place during this period.

Basilique Saint-Cordon

While the church has been undergoing restoration for the last few years, it’s still worth visiting from the outside. Alexandre Grigny erected it in the 1850s, along with the Note-Dame Basilica in Geneva, who worked on many other buildings in the Nord region.

Centre Place d’Armes

Valenciennes has recently spruced up its downtown, echoing the efforts of other French cities over the last decade. Most of the job was the Center Place d’Armes, a stylish shopping center with all the classic high streets stores like H&M, Zara, Sephora, and Fnac.

Bibliothèque Municipale

Valenciennes’ Municipal Library, founded in the 16th century, is not your standard library. Baroque architecture dates back to the 17th century, but the interior has much to offer.

La Maison Du Prévôt

The Provost’s House is also listed as a French Historic Monument, a relic of Valenciennes’ distant past. A turret with a spire is on top of this charming brick mansion with limestone quoins.
