Veszprem Overview

Veszprém is one of the oldest cities in Hungary and an urban area with a local government. It is approximately 15 kilometers north of Lake Balaton. It is the administrative center of Veszprém county.

Etymology

The name of the city originated from a Slavic personal name which translates to “stubborn”, and “self-confident, not willing to retreat”. This name is confirmed by records from 1002, 1086, and 1109. Vezprem is usually seen as something that originated in medieval scribal habits and the frequent exchange of B and V under the influence of Greek.

Where the city got its name from is a topic of debate, but it’s believed it was named after either Judith of Hungary or her son, who was also Polish.

Location and legend

The city of Buda can be reached via the M7 highway and Road 8, which are also the main road to reach it from Győr and Székesfehérvár.

According to legend, Veszprém was founded on seven hills. There are Várhegy (Castle Hill), Benedek-hegy (St. Benedict Hill), Jeruzsálem-hegy (Jerusalem Hill), Temetőhegy (Cemetery Hill), Gulyadomb (Herd Hill).

History

Anonymus Belæ Regis Notarius, an anonymous notary of King Béla III, wrote that the castle had already been here when the Hungarians first arrived during the 9th century. The castle was probably a Frankish fortress built in the 8th century. The castles of Veszprém, Esztergom, and Székesfehérvár were the earliest Hungarian stone castles – that had already been built by High Prince Géza, a time when motte castles were more common.

Veszprém played a pivotal role during the struggle to make Christianity the official religion of Hungary. Stephen I of Hungary defeated the armies of his chief opponent, Koppány, near Veszprém. According to Hungarian history, the city of Veszprém became the first episcopal seat of Hungary in 1009 and an archiepiscopal seat in 1993.

Veszprém is a city in Hungary, the favorite of Queen Gisella who was the wife of St. Stephen. Baroness Gisella, Queen Gisel, and King Stephen II were all crowned by the bishop of Veszprém for centuries. The city is still often called “the city of queens”. In the year 1294 Queen Fenenna confirmed that, at that time, the former Queen Elizabeth had the privilege to collect the donations of the church in Veszprém County.

Veszprém was among the first Hungarian cities to have a university – students studied law and arts here for several centuries. They were able to do this for centuries until the university finally closed in 1849. An early medieval school of arts was founded at Veszprém in the 13th century and became University Town again in the 20th century. The original Diocese of Veszprém was burned down by Peter I Csák.

In the battle of Mohacs, Hungary lost its independence and the territory shifted between Austrians and Ottomans for a long time to come. Veszprém was called ‘Pespirim’ during Ottoman rule as well as it was a sanjak center in Budin Province.

According to historical records, the town of Balaton was bombed by a Turkish military group in the 1550s. They were unable to maintain the occupation and their region north of Lake Balaton remained within Hungary until 1867 when it became part of Austria-Hungary. The castle was demolished by Vienna government in 1706. From 1918 to the 1920s, VESZPRIM was part of Austria-Hungary. From 1867 to 1891, it was part of Transleithania.

The city was captured by Soviet troops on April second, 1945 during their Vienna Offensive.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, Budapest is an overwhelmingly Hungarian city with a minority of Germans numbering just 2.4%. The second largest ethnic group is Roma followed by other marginal ethnicities.

The religious affiliation that most citizens adhere to is Catholic. The city’s second-largest denomination is Calvinist, making up 7% of the population, while Lutheran makes up 2% of the total population. Individuals who don’t identify with any religion account for 20% of the city’s population.

Climate

In Hungary’s Veszprém, summers are warm and winters are chilly. The weather patterns fluctuate around 25°F to 79°F and below 12°F or above 89°F on average throughout the year. The best time to visit Veszprém for warmer weather is mid-June to early September.

Public transport

The city of Vienna only has public buses. V-Busz is the company that runs all 30 lines, including lines 44 and 45 which don’t run during the night (and are easily identifiable even from a distance). Tickets are now sold on the buses, from ticket machines across the city, and at bus stations by V-Busz. The regional public transportation system is no longer in operation. Hungary’s state-funded bus company ÉNYKK is experiencing a shortage of funding due to old rolling stock. That’s why it was in the news recently when its CEO argued that with all the money being spent on promoting the Hungarian language and culture, they could afford to buy brand-new buses.
