The commune of Villeneuve-d’Ascq is located in northern France’s Nord department. Regarding area (27.46 km2), it is the largest city in the Métropole Européenne de Lille, with more than 60,000 inhabitants and 50,000 students. In addition, it is one of the most important cities in the Hauts-de-France region.
Name
“New city of Ascq” is its French name. The name Ascq may be derived from the Dutch word “ash.” The city’s name is generally written without the ordinary hyphen (official).
Geography
The city has approximately 10 km2 (3.9 sq mi) of greenspace, lakes, forests, and arable land. The town is between Lille and Roubaix, at the crossroads of the major freeways leading to Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, and Brussels.
History
Two feudal mounds, a Gallo-Roman site, and a Carolingian site, anchor what is now Villeneuve-d’Ascq’s development from the Celtic Gaul era.
It was selected to construct a new city named Lille-Est in the 1960s to facilitate the expansion of Lille city’s agglomeration and develop institutions there. In 1970, Ascq, Annappes, and Flers were amalgamated into the commune of Villeneuve-d’Ascq. The name Ascq evokes both the new (neuve) and the old (ancienne): the former commune Ascq and its memories as a martyr town, where 86 men were massacred by the Nazis on 1 April 1944.
Lille’s merger with the city was contentious and failed twice (1972 and 1976).

Due to the availability of land, the presence of researchers (particularly in the Cité Scientifique and Haute Borne), and the proximity to the Benelux and Paris economic regions, different types of businesses have their headquarters in Villeneuve d’Ascq. Shops and trade
The technopoly is home to two massive shopping centers. The indoor/roofed Center commercial V2, founded in 1977, was the largest shopping center north of Paris and remained the largest in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. Located near V2, Heron Parc is a 13,000 m2 (1139,931 sq ft) outdoor shopping center that houses numerous Auchan stores and a movie theater with 12 auditoriums.
Education and science
The first academic pole of the metropolitan area is Villeneuve d’Ascq—several educational and scientific facilities (around 42,000 students and 2,500 researchers).
Transport
As part of the Métropole Européenne de Lille, Villeneuve-d’Ascq is connected to Lille city center by a VAL, a light rubber-tired, fully automatic (driverless) metro. Villeneuve-d’Ascq is served by the VAL metro line from Quatre-Cantons and Cité Scientifique stations, which takes about ten minutes to reach Lille’s historical city center and railway stations.
Although the acronym VAL now stands for Véhicule Automatique Léger (automatic light vehicle), it originally stood for Villeneuve-d’Ascq à Lille (meaning Villeneuve-d’Ascq to Lille), which was the first line proposed, inaugurated on 25 April 1983. Located under the Place Salvador Allende (Salvadore Allende Square) and a shopping center that includes Auchan as one of its main tenants is Villeneuve d’Ascq metro station.
In addition to the train station Gare d’Ascq, Villeneuve-d’Ascq is served by Lille, Orchies, Tournai, and Liège in Belgium.

- Football (soccer) – There are three football teams in Villeneuve d’Ascq that play in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais league: US Ascq (promotion d’honneur), Villeneuve d’Ascq Métropole (promotion d’honneur) and Flers OS Villeneuve d’Ascq (1ere division of district).
- Rugby – A rugby union team named Lille Métropole Rugby Club Villeneuvois (ex-Rugby Club Villeneuve d’Ascq) represents Villeneuve d’Ascq in the France women’s rugby union championship.
- Track and field – Since 1988, the Stadium Nord has hosted an international meeting of track and field (formerly Open Gaz de France, Open du Nord, and now Meeting d’athlétisme Lille Métropole).
- Other sports – In Villeneuve d’Ascq, ESB Villeneuve-d’Ascq, a famous basketball club, plays in the Ligue Féminine de Basketball.
