Vincennes Overview
The commune of Vincennes is located in the Val-de-Marne department in the eastern suburbs of Paris, France. From the center of Paris, it is 6.7 kilometers (4.2 miles) away. One of Vincennes’ most famous landmarks is its castle: Château de Vincennes. From which it gets its name, the Bois de Vincennes, which is attached to Paris, is located adjacent but does not include it.
History
Despite escaping for over a month in 1778, the Marquis de Sade remained imprisoned in Vincennes fortress until February 1784. After that, the stronghold of Vincennes was closed, and de Sade was transferred to the Bastille.
“La Prison,” a poem by Alfred de Vigny in 1821, details the last days of the Man in the Iron Mask at Vincennes.
Charles X’s ministers were imprisoned at Vincennes fortress after the July Revolution.
It would prove successful and be adopted by the French army years later after Claude-Étienne Minié’s invention, the Minié ball, was tested in 1849.
At Vincennes, Mata Hari was executed by a French firing squad on 15 October 1917 for espionage.
A large part of the Bois de Vincennes, which belonged to Vincennes, was annexed by Paris in 1929, which resulted in the commune of Vincennes losing about half its land.
Also, in the 20th century, Vincennes hosted some famous European colonial expositions that showcased artifacts from former European colonies.
