Vlaardingen Overview
In the Netherlands, the city of Vlaardingen is located in the province of South Holland. Situated at the confluence of the Nieuwe Maas and the Oude Maas rivers, it is located on the north bank of the Nieuwe Maas. Approximately 72,404 residents live in the municipality, which covers 26.69 km2, including 23.57 km2 of land.
Geography
The A20 motorway divides the city into a northern (locally known as the “Holy”) and a southern portion. Schiedam is separated from the city on the east by the A4 motorway. On the other side of the Nieuwe Maas are Maassluis to the west, Schipluiden and Delft to the north, Schiedam and Rotterdam to the east, and Spijkenisse to the southwest. Located between Rotterdam and the Hook of Holland, the A20 connects the two cities. The Benelux tunnel binds A20 and A15 (the tunnel that runs under the Nieuwe Waterweg).

Climate
Vlaardingen has a comfortable summer; a long, cold, and windy winter; and partly cloudy skies most of the time. Temperatures typically range from 34°F to 71°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 23°F or exceeding 81°F. Late June and early September is the best time to visit Vlaardingen for warm-weather activities.
History
About 2900 to 2600 BC, the area around Vlaardingen had already been settled. Vlaardingen skeletons dating to about 1300 BC were found in 1990; the oldest DNA found anywhere in the Netherlands was from the structure. Although Vlaardingen, like much of the west of the Netherlands, probably had at least one stronghold or even a vicus Flenio in the Roman Age, it was uninhabited between roughly 250 CE and 700 CE. The area was once again known as In Pagio Marsum, where a little church was built, which became Vlaardingen. A list of churches Willibrord, the Apostle to the Frisians, inherited from Echternach Abbey mentions this church.
It was Dirk III’s stronghold at Vlaardingen in 1018, who levied an illegal toll on ships along the Meuse. During the (First) Battle of Vlaardingen, Dirk III defeated an army sent by Henry II to end this practice. Dirk IV repelled another attack in 1047 (Second Battle of Vlaardingen). In 2018, a historical reenactment was held to commemorate the first battle.
Vlaardingen’s growth was ended by the Saint Thomas Flood of December 21, 1163, and due to the departure of the Counts of Holland, the country’s development stagnated.
The city rights of Vlaardingen were granted by Floris V, Count of Holland, in 1273. There may be older city rights, but they cannot be proven.
Economy
Unilever has a research center in Vlaardingen (next to the former Sunlight factory renamed Lever Faberge Sourcing Unit Vlaardingen). There are still some ship repair businesses in Eastern Vlaardingen beside the Nieuwe Maas River. For many years, the Vulcaanhaven was the world’s largest privately owned artificial harbor. Warmelo & Van Der Drift, the last major herring factory in Vlaardingen, moved to Katwijk aan Zee in the middle of 2012. P&O Ferries sails from Hull to Felixstowe and Immingham, and DFDS Seaways sails to Felixstowe and Immingham.
Events
Every year, on the first Saturday of June, the “Vlaardings Loggerfestival” (loggers are traditional ships used for herring fishing). In 2003, the mayor renamed the festival “Haring en Bierfeest” (herring and beer festival). There was a resurgence of Haring en Bierfeest in 2015.
