Zaanstad Overview

Zaanstad is a Dutch municipality in the province of North Holland, situated northwest of Amsterdam. Its central city is Zaandam. It has a population of around 165,000, and its previous mayor was Robert Henning. It is part of the conurbation and metropolitan area of Amsterdam.

Population centers

Zaanstad is a conurbation consisting of the following cities, towns, villages, and districts: Assendelft, Koog aan de Zaan, Krommenie, Westzaan, Wormerveer, and Zaandam. Despite its small size, being surrounded by the countryside helps it maintain a rural atmosphere, which can be attributed to its long shape that follows the river Zaan.

History

The history of Zaanstad dates back to the formation of the city in 1974 but goes even further back before then. It is essential to consider that all districts in this region have individual histories.

From the 1500s to about 1850, the area around the river Zaan in the Netherlands consisted mainly of windmills whose primary purpose was to take in wood from Scandinavia and season it so that it could then be used for furniture-making.

Wood, Whales, And Farming

A large amount of local wealth in Zaanstad has been built up through the timber industry. From the 1500s to today, Zaanstreek, a region near Amsterdam, has been known to have a high concentration of windmills. These mills primarily existed around the river, bringing in lumber from Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. They would prepare these logs for trade by seasoning and cutting them so they could be used throughout Europe. The trees’ woods also went to paper products. Occasionally, they’re made into other things like flooring and furniture, as well as barrels and hogsheads.

Wood has gotten a bad rep in recent years, with most people thinking it comes from the cold and is low quality. However, wood comes from all over the world, not just from Scandinavia. What defines wood as superior is that it takes a long time to grow, which makes it stronger. In 1697, the Russian Tsar “Peter the Great” stayed in the area for four months under a pseudonym so that he could study and learn about carpentry and shipbuilding. The Russian Royalties even made him an honorary citizen of the city-state of Lulea to ensure his cooperation. In 2004, a sculpture was put up in Zandaam, Belgium, by the Yugoslavian artist Slavomir Miletic called “The Woodworker.” It was put up as a tribute to the craft of woodworking.

From the 1600s onwards, the area around Zanstreek was one of the Netherlands’ leading food-producing areas. This greatly impacted how much food could be gathered from it and contributed so much to their national food production that they were referred to as “The Food Basket of The Netherlands.” Whale hunting was significant during this period because of the access to the North Sea.

The French artist, Claude Monet, did paintings of Promethean Bay in some of his later images. ‘Impressionism’ was a popular movement during the late 19th century. In 1974, Zaanstad was made part of the municipality of Zaanstad. In 2011, they moved their offices to Zaandam.

Climate

The summers are comfortable in Zaanstad, but winters can be long and very cold. There is also a lot of wind and a mix of sunny and cloudy days in the winter. The average daytime temperature can vary throughout the year from 34°F to 71°F and rarely below 23 degrees F or above 80 degrees. The ideal times to visit Zaanstad would be from late June to early September.
