Zvolen Overview
Situated on the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers, close to Banská Bystrica, Zvolen is a town in central Slovakia. Bojana mountain surrounds it from the east, Kremnické vrchy from the west, and Javorie and Tiavnické vrchy from the south. There is a county seat in Zvolen.
Etymology
The name derives from Slovak (Slavic) and means “the chosen one, fabulous, excellent.” Lilium (earliest mention 1135) inspired both the Hungarian and German words Zólyom and Sohl. Using the adjective “Old” (German: Altsohl, Slovak: Star* Zvolen, Latin: Antiquum or Vetus Solium) distinguishes Zvolen from Banská Bystrica (German: Sohl, Neusohl).
History
The Paleolithic period is when Zvolen was inhabited. Slavic settlements (today’s Môová neighborhood) became the regional center of central Slovakia in the ninth century. Up until the 1760s, Zvolen remained the county capital. In the 11th and 12th centuries, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, Pustý hrad, was constructed. Originally built under the castle, Buda-Kraków was an important trade route (Via Magna). As one of the first towns in Hungary, Zvolen was granted town privileges by King Béla IV in the 1230s. After the original document was destroyed in the war, the benefits were confirmed on 28 December 1243. The Hungarian kings used to hunt at the castle, which was later built by King Louis I the Great. In 1385, the future queen regnant Mary of Hungary and emperor Sigismund were married there.
The Kuruc army defeated the Austrian, Danish, Vojvodina, and Hungarian troops in the battle of Zvolen during Rákóczi’s War of Independence.
He represented Zvolen as a member of the Diet in 1848–49. Zvolen became a railroad hub and an industrial center between 1871 and 1872 as two new railways were built. During the Slovak National Uprising, Zvolen played an important role. Near the Zvolen castle, you can see two of its armored trains made by the local railway manufactory, Hurban and Tefánik.
It boasts a large timber factory, a railroad hub, and a technical university, Technica Univerzita vo Zvolene. The nearby airport of Sliač offers direct flights to Prague. Several local businesses have become popular with tourists since the town square was renovated in 2002. During the winter, ice rinks are constructed in the center, and festive celebrations occur.
Demographics
The population of Zvolen is 43,147 (as of 31 December 2005). It is estimated that 95.9% of the population is Slovak, and 1.2% is Czech. 52.5% of the population was Roman Catholic, 26.4% were unaffiliated, and 15% were Lutherans.
Climate
Summers in Zvolen are warm, winters are cold and snowy, and there is some cloud cover throughout the year. Temperatures range from 20°F to 79°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 3°F or rising above 89°F. Mid-June to early September is the best time to visit Zvolen for warm-weather activities.
