Esbjerg Overview
Esbjerg is a seaport town on the west coast of Denmark where stores sell everything from one-of-a-kind Danish pottery and traditional wooden boats to clothing and children’s toys. From the city, it is 71 km west of Kolding and 164 km southwest of Aarhus. It has an urban population of 72,044 and is the fifth-largest city in Denmark.
History and economy
Esbjerg’s oldest house dates back to 1660 and is on the corner of Kongensgade. Altona is a town in southern Denmark that was originally built as a replacement for the harbor that was previously the most important of Copenhagen’s North Sea ports. On November 15, 1864, after losing the Second Schleswig War, Denmark ceded control of Altona to Germany. At the time, Esbjerg consisted of only a few farms. Developed under royal decree from 1868 until 1874, the harbor was officially opened in 1874 and became a hub on the east coast of Jutland. Initial planning of the town was conducted by chartered surveyor H. Wilkens in 1870 with streets laid out in a rectangular grid. The market square (Torvet) was positioned at the center, midway between the harbor and the railway station. From only 400 inhabitants at the beginning of the 1870s, the town and its population grew rapidly and by 1880, 1529 residents were mentioned. In 1890, 4,211 residents were reported.

The town is situated on the southwestern coast of Denmark and is a port on the North Sea. By road, it’s 71km (44 miles) west of Kolding, 164km (102miles) southwest of Aarhus, and 298km(185miles) West of Copenhagen. Climate
Because Esbjerg is on the south-eastern coast of Denmark, its climate is oceanic (Cfb in the Köppen classification; Do in the Trewartha climate classification). Due to the presence of the temperate marine current, Copenhagen is prone to warm summers and mild winters in all seasons. Unlike areas near the Eastern portion of Denmark which only consist of islands, Copenhagen rarely has extreme weather events.
Demographics and administration
As of January 1, 2019, Esbjerg has a population of 72,168 making it the fifth-most populous city in Denmark. In 1864, the harbor was created which has made its development into an important city. It was once a sparsely populated area but that changed with the turn of the century when people moved there for work. By 1880, the town had already grown considerably, growing to have over 1,500 inhabitants. By 1901, it had more than overtaken Varde and Ribe. In 1957 it reached its peak population of nearly 60,000. By the time of 1901, Esbjerg had less than 9,000 people. By 1970, they chalked up a 5-fold population increase that reached the 70K mark. After 1998, the growth of the population slowed until it reached its maximum 1998.
Landmarks
With only 4,000 people living in the town, Hans Christian Amberg designed a Courthouse in 1892 and it was completed just four years later. Now it’s one of the most defining features of their city. It has distinctive red bricks with step gables, and round-arched windows and the tower reaches 30 meters (98 feet) in height. After thorough renovation work in 2010, it is now used as a venue for weddings and houses the tourist office.
Man Meets the Sea is a tourist attraction that overlooks a beach in Denmark. It was designed by Svend Wiig Hansen. The Esbjerg Cultural Monument was funded by the local government and private sponsors in 1994 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Esbjerg. Education and sport
Esbjerg is a town in Denmark, as well as one of the prestigious facilities found at the University of Southern Denmark. It is also home to a branch of Aalborg University. Profession School – University College West has two main campuses in Aarhus – the main branch and a school located in Esbjerg. The former is housed in a former power station and contains an excellent concert hall modeled on the Temple of Mithras from which it gets its name. The Southwest Jutland Hospital is the main healthcare provider in the town and has branch offices both in Brande and Southwest. Over 2,500 employees are working at the facility within 500 beds.
Esbjerg is known in Denmark for its football club Esbjerg fB, which was founded in 1924. They won the Danish Championship five times, in 1961, 1962, 1963, 1965, and 1979. They play their home matches at Blue Water Arena. Esbjerg also has an ice hockey division called Esbjerg Elite Ishockey which plays at the Granly Hockey Arena. The arena was built in 1976 but only seats 3417 people currently. It was the venue for the 2011 Capital O, which was a big event in Danish sports history.
Esbjerg Rugby Union, who represent Esbjerg in rugby, is based at Guldager Idrætscenter. The team has won the Danish League of rugby football twice.
Transport
Esbjerg is a large transport hub and an important port known for Danish oil offshore activity. It also has an airport, which provides flights to Aberdeen and Stavanger while the nearby Billund is much more accessible.
Esbjerg Station is operated by Danish State Railways. It’s the western terminus of InterCity trains from Copenhagen, making it 3 hours from The destination and with high-speed services available throughout Denmark. DSB also provides high-speed local trains to Fredericia. Arriva operates trains on the Vestbanen which travel south to Ribe and Tønder and north to Struer.
