Horsens is a city located in Denmark with a population of over 60,000. It is the 8th largest city in Denmark and its population makes it one of the most populous. Horsens also has a very strong focus on education, culture, and sports.
Geography
Horsens is located in east Jutland on the shores of Horsens Fjord. Its terrain consists of low hills and valleys created by glaciers during the last ice ages. Horsens is about 50 km south of Aarhus, and 30 km north of Vejle. It’s also about a 200 km drive from Copenhagen center.
History
It is believed that when settlers came to Denmark 3000 years ago, they chose to name the region of Horsens by interpreting ancient Danish that used the words “horse” and “naze”, meaning headland. The name has been in use since 1200 AD.
The city’s earliest history traces back to a pagan burial site and houses from the 10th century. In the 12th century, coins were issued by Sweyn III and Valdemar I in the city. There was an entirely different legal code in the 13th century that is still active today.
Excavations have shown that the city was expanded around 1300, with a moat going around the city and its harbor. From this point forward, industrialization started in the middle of the 19th century. Until the 1800s, most of Denmark’s population lived in the countryside, but after industrialization, it began to urbanize in a big way. This period of rapid change brought lots of people into cities from rural areas and made them have more interaction with each other.
Economy
The city is undergoing a positive development in its growth, with new industries moving to Horsens and/or expanding their businesses already in Horsens. A lot of electronics-related companies are there as well including the only Industrial Museum. VIA University College is part of the city that brings in a lot of international students to come and live here.
Culture
For a lot of the last few years, much effort has been put into the expansion and improvement of cultural events. They’ve been a big hit and are thriving more than ever. In 2015, the CASA Arena will host the Motorcycle Speedway when it houses the Speedway GP Denmark for the first time. After hosting in 2003-2014 at Parken Stadium, Copenhagen, it will do so from 2016.
Horsens supports a professional basketball team and plays at one of the arenas in the city, Forum Horsens. It has a capacity of 3,300. The team has won the league 6 times most recently in 2014–15 and 2015–16 and has also won the Danish Men’s Basketball Cup 3 times, most recently in the 2014–15 season.
