History
It was on 25 December 1658 that the Allied Polish and Danish forces under Hetman Stefan Czarniecki defeated Swedish forces in the Battle of Kolding.
In a battle between German and Danish forces, the town was located on April 23rd during the First War of Schleswig.
On 3 November 2004, the firework factory N.P. Johnsen’s in the suburb of Seest burst into flames and erupted into one fatality, 85 injuries, and destroyed homes for 2000 people during this disaster forced evacuation.
Review
Built in the 13th century, Koldinghus originally served as the royal castle of Danish King Eric Klipping until it was abandoned in the early 16th century and moved to its current location. The chapel and hall of this medieval castle are still used for ceremonial government meetings today. Located in Denmark, Jutland’s last royal residence was one of the known 13th-century churches, with a renowned stone interior that has been featured on its black and white tag.
Main sights
The Museet på Koldinghus (Museum of the City of Kolding) has an extensive collection of Danish art from the 12th century to 1940. It also consists of a few miscellaneous artifacts that are only relevant to the city.
The Trapholt Art Museum features artists from all over the world, prioritizing Danish artists up through 1900 and supplementing with a smaller number of international pieces. Alongside countless fine pieces of art, there is also a large collection of chairs at the Trapholt.

The University of Southern Denmark has a new campus in the old hospital that was closed in 1975. The new Kolding Campus opened downtown in 2014. The University of Southern Denmark is developing a new building to be further east at Grønborggrunden in central Kolding.
