Gothenburg Overview
The west coast of Sweden is home to the principal city of Gothenburg, located off the Göta älv river. The main thoroughfare, the Avenyn, is lined with many cafes and shops and is known for its Dutch-style canals. A landscaped sculpture garden-themed rides and performance venues make Liseberg a famous amusement park.
History
In the early modern period, the configuration of Sweden’s borders made Gothenburg strategically critical as the only Swedish gateway to Skagerrak, the North Sea, and the Atlantic. The city lies on the west coast of Sweden between Danish Halland and Norwegian Bohuslän, in a very narrow strip of Swedish territory. As a result of several failed attempts, Gothenburg was finally founded in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus (Gustaf II Adolf).
The site of the first church built in Gothenburg, which Danish invaders destroyed, is marked by a stone near the north end of the Elvsborg Bridge in Färjenäs Park. 1603 saw the building of the church, and 1611 saw its destruction. Due to their expertise in draining and building in marshy areas, Dutch planners and engineers were hired to construct the city, which the Dutch, Germans, and Scots heavily influenced. The town resembles Dutch cities such as Amsterdam, Batavia (Jakarta), and New Amsterdam (Manhattan). In Gothenburg, the streets and canals were designed similarly to those in Jakarta, which was built by the Dutch around the same time. The Dutch initially dominated Gothenburg’s politics, and the Swedes only gained power after the last Dutch politician in the city’s council died in 1652. There was a proposal to make Dutch the town’s official language during the Dutch period. In the 17th century, the city walls were built with great strength. It was decided in 1807 that most of the city’s borders should be torn down. An estimated 150 soldiers from the Bohus regiment worked on the project starting in 1810.
Along with the Dutch, Scots who settled in Gothenburg also heavily influenced the town. A number of them became well-known people. William Chalmers, the son of a Scottish immigrant, donated his fortune to establish the Chalmers University of Technology. Founded in 1841 by the Scotsman Alexander Keiller, the Götaverken shipbuilding company operated until 1989. Keiller Park was donated to the city in 1906 by his son James Keiller.
Symbolically holding a shield with the national emblem, the Three Crowns, the Gothenburg coat of arms was based on the Swedish coat of arms.
Geography
The city of Gothenburg is located on the west coast of Sweden, about halfway between Copenhagen (Denmark) and Oslo (Norway). Due to its location at the mouth of the Göta älv, which feeds into the Kattegatt, an arm of the North Sea, the city has become an important trading center. Bohuslän’s coast is characterized by rough, barren rocks and cliffs, which are also characteristic of Gothenburg’s archipelago. As a result of the Gulf Stream, the city has a mild climate and moderate precipitation. Sweden ranks second only to its capital Stockholm in terms of population.

The climate in Gothenburg is oceanic (Cfb, according to Köppen climate classification). This is mainly due to the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream, which despite its northern latitude, keeps temperatures mild throughout the year and warmer than places at a similar latitude like Stockholm. Summer daylight lasts 18 hours and 5 minutes, but late December daylight lasts 6 hours and 32 minutes. In recent decades, Stockholm’s climate has become significantly milder, especially in summer and winter; July temperatures used to be below Stockholm’s 1961-1990 averages but now exceed them.

It has recently been established at Lindholmen in Norra Vlvstranden, Hisingen.

- Sea – After being a Gothenburg institution since the 19th century, the English ferry (Englandfärjan) to Newcastle via Kristiansand (run by DFDS Seaways) ceased running in October 2006.
