Koge Overview
Køge is a seaport on the coast of Køge Bugt 39 km southwest of Copenhagen. It is the principal town and seat of Køge Municipality, Region Sjælland, Denmark. In 2021, the urban area had a population of 38,155.
Køge is located in the Copenhagen metropolitan area and is connected to downtown Copenhagen by two easy-to-use commuter rail lines. The newest rail line will also connect to Køge Airport in 2020 when it’s completed.
History
Køge has a lot of history, dating back to the Middle Ages. You can see archaeological remains found on Archbishop’s Road and Calenberg Street, which show that guess is an important commerce hub.
At least 15 people were convicted of being witches and sentenced to death during the 16th-century witch hunts in Copenhagen. In 1643, Denmark attacked Sweden and conquered the Køge Bay region in the south of what is now known as Djursland. In 1807, the town and surrounding area were the scenes of a battle between British and Danish troops in which Køge remained small until the late 19th century. Today, Køge forms the core of an industry-focused town with a population of over 10 000 inhabitants.

Køge is located at the end of the Bay of Køge, which is demarcated by Copenhagen to the north and the Stevns Peninsula to the south. And it’s where Køge Å (Køge Creek) meets the sea.
Apart from Køge, its surroundings are Ølby L and Ølsemagle L to the north, and Hastrup and Herfølge.
Economy
Køge port is close to the Scandinavian Transport Centre, an expansive business park on the northwest outskirts of town. There you’ll find everything from Danish headquarters and distribution centers to large conglomerates like this one.
Sports
HB Køge is a professional football club from the city of Herfølge in Denmark. They currently play in the Danish 1st Division and their home ground is named Herfølge Stadion. It is used and serves as the primary training field and facilities of the professional club, besides the now amateur mother club of Herfølge BK. The facility is situated in the suburb of Herfølge, about 5 kilometers south of central Køge.
Transport
Roads – The E47 is a part of the motorway that terminates in Køge, but it also extends to Sønderborg, where it meets with the E55. The Partial Y interchange is located near Køge and only a few kilometers northwest of where that city begins.
Railway stations – The train station known as Køge is the principal railway station of the town. The Copenhagen S-train has a line that begins here. There are also regional trains to Roskilde and Næstved, plus local train services to Stevns. There is an S-train station in the northern part of Ølby Lyng and, locally, there are train stations in south Herfølge.
- Port of Køge – The Port of Køge is one of the oldest ports in Denmark – established in the 13th century, it’s one of the most popular embarkation points for ferries to nearby islands such as Rønne on Bornholm. In 2004, a ferry connection was started to this island operated by BornholmerFærgen.
Climate
The summers are comfortable and partly cloudy in Køge. The winters are long, very cold, snowy, and mostly cloudy but windy year-round. The temperature typically varies from 29°F to 71°F and is rarely below 17°F or above 84°F throughout the year. The best time to visit Køge for warm-weather activities is from late June to late August.
