Silkeborg Overview
Silkeborg is located in the middle of Denmark, featuring a natural landscape. It’s also surrounded by a forest and has some hills. Silkeborg is also known as Denmark’s outdoor capital. Gudenå, which connects Silkeborg to the lakes is also part of Hornsøerne (the Horn lakes). Silkeborg is divided into East and West by the lake of Silkeborg Langsø, which flows into the Gudenå River at its eastern side.
History
Silkeborg is a town in Denmark with a long history that dates back to the 15th century. It has numerous notable sites, such as castles, monasteries, and the Drewsen and Son Mill. The town was built around a paper mill (Drewsen og Sønner) set up in 1844. Silkeborg Papirfabrik is located near the Gudenå River, which is used as a source of energy, resources for paper production, and a means of transport. Drewsen is regarded as the founder of the city and manages the daily management of The Mill. A statue of Michael Drewsen now stands in front of the old city hall in the town square. Silkeborg became a trading center in 1845, and by 1850, the small settlement had grown to 556 people. The City Council and Parish were both established in 1855. Silkeborg was awarded the status of a market town in 1900. The population was recorded as being 7,228 in 1901 and 8,792 in 1911. Today, a unique landmark remains from the German occupation of Denmark. Examining the remnants today, you can see bunkers that had been built from originally being used as Silkeborg baths. What an interesting place to visit with history at its best!
Geography
Silkeborg is located in the region known as Søhøjlandet (lit.: the lake-highland) in mid-eastern Jutland. The landscape consists of lakes, extensive woodlands such as the Silkeborg Forests, and some of the highest points in Denmark. Climate
Silkeborg has a temperate, not too hot summer and cold but sunny winters. Summer weather is mostly between 75-90 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas winters have regularly dipped below 30 and failed to rise past 60 degrees. The best time of year to visit Silkeborg for warm-weather activities is from late June through to the end of August.
Economy
In 1993, Silkeborg Papirfabrik in Denmark was purchased by Drewsen Special Papers. There were a lot of financial difficulties at the mill throughout the 1990s and they struggled to remain a prominent business. In 2000, they finally reached their goal and became established again as one of the dominant businesses in Silkeborg and Denmark. Urban renewal in this area turned the old industrial area into a new commercial district with modern apartments and cafes. It also created a new residential neighborhood with houses and nightlife.
Jyske Bank is Denmark’s third-largest bank, and it has a large number of offices all across the country.
Regatta
Since 1899 the city of Silkeborg has had an annual event called Ildfestregatta, which refers to both the actual race and excursion. The event is held once every three years. The streets of the city become a temporary venue for live music, merchandise stalls, and an amusement park from 5 pm to 7 pm during the regatta season. How beautiful the houses have their lamps and boats along the river!
Hjejlen is a historic steamboat that travels between Silkeborg and Himmelbjerget. It can be seen in the former paper mills of the city now rebranded as the Radisson-SAS Hotel and Waterfront, with other shops in it.
Every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at noon there is an unofficial Danish fireworks competition. On Saturday the company whose launch had the most appealing fireworks is announced as the winner. Every year, the City Council and Silkeborg Lake hire a pyrotechnician to choreograph and oversee the fireworks display at a predetermined time. Usually, they do this on Saturday evening when they have special openings to peek behind the curtain or enjoy an otherwise private viewing from various locations such as City Hall.
Sports
Silkeborg is home to football and handball, two of Denmark’s most popular sports. The city’s professional football team, Silkeborg IF, plays in Danish football’s highest league and has one Cup victory: 1994. Cyclists live near the Jyllands-Ringen bike race track in Resenbro and Silkeborg is home to a cycling club. The club created an élite amateur pro-cyclist team in 2004 called Team Designa Køkken. Silkeborg is known as the Nordic ski capital. It also has a natural snow park with warming huts in winter and a new high-speed quad-skiing track that is open all year long.

Silkeborg is home to two media outlets: Daily Midtjyllands Avis and Radio Silkeborg, the oldest of which was founded in 1857. Denmark’s oldest newspaper, Silkeborg Stiftstidende is published in the charming city of Silkeborg and was founded 11 years after the town’s founding. For many years they had printing facilities, but now they use those of Jyllands-Posten.

– Silkeborg is connected by motorways to Aarhus, Herning, Horsens, Randers and Viborg. The city completed its new motorway in September 2016 that connects the city to Aarhus and Herning. Regional buses depart from the train station in town. There are 12 local bus routes, serving the city center and suburbs.Rail
– Aarhus to Herning, is the main station on the Silkeborg railway line with many different options for you. Horsens and Langå used to have railway connections that stopped in the 1960s, but they are no longer there.Water
