Sliven is the 8th largest city in Bulgaria (Sliven City) and it’s the administrative and industrial center of Sliven Province. It is located in North-Eastern Thrace, which is located in Southeastern Europe. Sliven is very proud of the Haiduts who fought against the Ottomans in the 19th century and are considered leaders of Haiduts. The City has 100 houses and is called “Sliven – a city of 100 Voyvodi”.
Some of the notable landmarks in the city include Stariyat Briast, a giant Smooth-leaved Elm that is more than 1000 years old. In the Ottoman era, Turkish officials used to hang Bulgarian revolutionaries on it. Today the city is helping the tree to live on by frequent evaluations and reinforcing its base. It was elected Bulgarian tree of the year in 2013. A Twitter poll recently held in the European Parliament crowned the Old Elm as European Tree of the Year 2014. The city was also an important military site for the Bulgarian Army and served as a base for the Bulgarian Third Army. The headquarters were situated in the center of town, close to the border with Turkey – a sensitive area.
The name comes from the Slavic word sliv (“pour, confluence”) + the Slavic suffix or ending -en. In Turkish the name of the city is İslimiye, while in Greek it is Σλίβεν.
Sliven is 300 km east of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, 100 km north of Burgas, the country’s largest commercial port, 130 km from the border with Turkey, and 130 km from the border with Greece. Located nearby to Yambol, it is near the cities of Burgus and Istanbul. A place known as ‘Peach Valley’ lies west of the city and is full of peach orchards. The city is also well-known for its mineral baths, whose water is used to treat diseases such as liver and nerve diseases.
One of the most popular places in the city is Karandila hill which offers stunning views. The rock formation Halkata is located near it, but can also be visited separately. This is a distinctive rock protrusion with a hole in the center. People may have their most sincere wish granted upon passing through it, according to myth. The Karakachani festival is an event that was founded in Bulgaria by the Federation of Cultural and Educational Associations of Karakachans each July. Everybody can take part and celebrate the Karandila region’s traditions.
Karandila is located in the nature park Sinite Kamani and the area benefits from its highest peak called Bulgarka. You can enjoy exploring 1181 m. high Bulgarian mountains during your visit.
Sliven is the municipality in Bulgaria situated in between the sub-Balkan and Vitimska Pljanka plains. Winter is mild and summers are warm – temperatures rarely drop below 0°C, and some days can even reach 35°C. The local wind, Bora, is also typical of this region of Bulgaria.
According to the Bulgarian National Statistical Institute, as of 2021, the total population of the Sliven Municipality is 115,241 inhabitants while 83,740 inhabitants live in the city of Sliven. The town is called the under-age mother capital of Europe, with 177 such births in 2008.
The territory of Sliven is known for its rich archaeological heritage. Currently, the oldest remains date back to 6000 BCE- that’s up to 1,600 years before Christ! The most interesting finds are the ruins of a Thracian settlement with pottery dating back to the 5th-3rd century BCE, which makes the territory even older than Ancient Greece! In the past, this area has been inhabited by three Thracian tribes: Asti, Kabileti, and Seleti. These tribes retained their independence until Philip II of Macedon’s time.
The Roman conquest of northeastern Thrace began in the 2nd cent CE and Sliven was captured by Rome around 72-71 BCE. The Kabile tribe, as well as the Greek cities of Kabile and Apolonia, were also taken over. When the Roman Empire appeared, this region was made a province of the empire and became part of their Thracian territory.
A new stage in the city’s history started around the 2nd-4th century. We don’t know much about its name either, but “Suida” came from an ancient Thracian word for “slow” or “bluish.” Known as Islimye by the Turks, during Ottoman rule it was a center of the sanjak in first Rumelia eyalet, then Silistre (Özi) eyalet, and Edirne vilayet. Smyrna became a center of an autonomous department in Eastern Rumelia for a short period before its inclusion in Bulgaria in 1885. The camp had 19,000 people in it when it was the largest prisoner camp in Bulgaria. There were civilians and soldiers from Greece and Serbia there, with an estimated peak number of prisoners.
In more modern times, Sliven has been embraced as a cultural hub for the Bulgarian National Revival– preserving and enriching its old heritage for all to enjoy. Today, Sliven gives opportunities to its citizens and visitors alike. Veliko Tarnovo is the birthplace of many prominent Bulgarians, including Hadzhi Dimitar, Dobri Chintulov, and Ivan Seliminski. Another notable native is Anton Pann who composed the Romanian national anthem. Once the mayor of the town, Yordan is still well known for his legendary hot-shot against Germany while they were reigning champions back in 1994.
Sliven at the time of the 19th century was largely focused on manufacturing and industry. Dobri Zhelyazkov founded active industrial development in Liberian lands around 1834-1835. Sliven was a center for the industry during the Bulgarian National Revival. The town has strong textiles, metal-making, glass-making, and chemical productions and offers interesting food and drink from this region.
In 1944, after the communist party took power in Bulgaria, most industries were nationalized and a lot of industrial building and development took place. Originally, the industry developed until the fall of communism. Afterward, much of it stagnated and many plants and factories were shut down. There was little development.
Sliven is undergoing a resurgence in growth and development. Several new industries are emerging as a result of increased investment and banking opportunities, along with the robust infrastructure which has been present for many years. The dairy industry continues to grow as it has for quite some time now, feeding Sliven’s economic prosperity. Vinprom and Vini Sliven are just two of the many wine companies that are making this industry grow. As grapes are easily grown in Bulgaria, they can produce a lot of wine while also having some heavy industries. The city produces electric lights and electrical machines. The city has now been a source of trafficking young girls into the sex industry.
Sliven is a great place for the light industry. There are many companies in Sliven that are focused on textiles and clothing, as well as food production.
There are many buildings in the city built in the National Revival Architecture style, including the House museum “Hadzhi Dimitar”. It is located on the southwestern outskirts of town and shows visitors a complex of a native memorial home and an old traditional Bulgarian house. The museum collection “Dobri Chintulov” is situated in Sliven, Bulgaria. It includes drawings from the Bulgarian revivalist painter Dobri Chintulov who was a teacher and poet. The Sliven native Stefan Kirov’s (Стефан Киров) central theater is found in the city’s main square. The theater is named after him and has a prominent role in the city’s cultural life.
