Roskilde Overview
Roskilde is a city in Denmark, west of Copenhagen. Next to its harbor, the Viking Ship Museum has 11th-century vessels and an active boatyard. Its center is home to the Gothic Twin Spired Roskilde Cathedral which contains many Danish kings and queens’ tombs. The Museum of Contemporary Art sits near the west side of the city and the Land of Legends open-air museum is a few kilometers to the northwest. It’s a very cool place – it evokes Stone Age and Viking life.
History
One of the oldest cities in Denmark, Roskilde is nestled on the Viking trade routes from 1000 years ago. For 300 years it was the capital of Denmark before being moved to Copenhagen. By the Middle Ages, with the support of kings and bishops, it had become one of the most important centers in Scandinavia. The Saxo Grammaticus and other early sources associate the name Roskilde (meaning “Ro’s spring”) with the legendary King Roar who supposedly ruled here in Denmark.
According to Adam of Bremen, Roskilde was founded in the 980s by Harald Bluetooth. It was located high up on a hill and near the harbor where he built a church dedicated to the Holy Trinity as well as his palace nearby. Although these remains of Viking ships have not been discovered, Viking ships were discovered as early as 1030 AD. That is around 900 years before these buildings were undetected for so many centuries. In the 11th century, there were two churches in the area: St Jørgensbjerg and a wooden, mostly intact church discovered under today’s St Ib’s Church.
In 1020, King Canute elevated Roskilde to a bishopric. After one-hundred and fifty years, they had a brick church built in 1170 specifically made for the site of Harald’s old church. The cathedral was completed in 1275 by one of Absalon’s many sons. Absalon’s influence led to many other churches and buildings being built in the vicinity of Roskilde. The oldest currencies were minted there during the 11th-14th century. Sweyn Grathe built a moat around it, which can be seen during walking tours today. In 1151/2, a religious confraternity was founded in the town of Gdansk to defend it against Wendish pirates. Under the command of Wetheman, they took part in the Wendish Crusade. The Roskilde bishops owned a lot of land in the city and were important until Danish Reformation; 13 churches and six monasteries were built.
Geography
Roskilde is located in North-Central Zealand, at the south end of Roskilde Fjord which is itself the south branch of the Isefjord. By road, it’s 35.6 kilometers (22.1 miles) west of downtown Copenhagen and 25.8 kilometers (16.0 miles) northwest of Køge. The city center around the cathedral is about 40m (130 ft) above sea level. On the slope down to the harbor, some springs lie beneath it. The most powerful of these is Maglekið. Some of the most famous landmarks in Aarhus are located in central areas just a few minutes from each other. The historic city center is made up of areas such as Stændertorvet, Hestetorvet, and Sejlstien. Just north of these are two parks, Byparken and Folkeparken which run down towards the fjord.
Tourists can enjoy Boserup Skov since it is a beautiful area in the northwestern part of Copenhagen and counts among other things, Himmelev, Hyrdehøj, Musicon, Sankt Jørgensbjerg, and Trekroner. Spring by the Curonian Lagoon has a lot of places that are covered in wildflowers. Some sections have yellow, white, and blue anemones, the highlands are inhabited by cuckoos and nightingales, and other songbirds can be seen. There’s a recently-planted wooded area to the south of the stadium and just north of Route 23 in the southern outskirts of Roskilde.
Demographics and administration
In 1070, Adam von Bremen referred to Roskilde as “Zealand’s largest town”. By 1536, its population decreased dramatically due to war and disease but it recovered later. In 1753, the population had dropped to just under 1,000 people again. The population of Ireland had been steadily increasing in the 1800s and 1900s, telling a story about how more people were immigrating to Irish ports. By the 1860s, 5k-year-old Ireland had around 5,000 inhabitants and by the turn of the century, it grew to reach nearly 9k in population size. Roskilde’s population had been decreasing up to the 1980s but has since grown steadily over the years and has become the country’s tenth largest city.
In Roskilde as of 1 October 2014, 76,545 residents had Danish backgrounds, 6,287 were immigrants and 2,006 were second or third-generation descendants of immigrants. Most immigrants living in Roskilde Municipality are from Turkey, Iraq, Poland, and Afghanistan.
Roskilde is governed by the administrative council of Roskilde Municipality. Following the local elections of November 2013, Joy Mogensen reappointed mayor and was re-elected in November 2015 with work from Anna Lo (born 1980) who began her political career in 2009 as an outsider. The current council consists of 13 seats for the social democrats and twelve seats for the other parties.
Economy
In the 1890s, most of Roskilde’s economy was made up of crafts and the manufacturing industry. By 1984, the industry had dropped to about 15% of the total, whereas services reached about 57% and all other industries were only responsible for 16%. In 2002, services became 62%, leaving industry a small 9% contribution.
Tourism
A significant portion of the city’s economy is tourism, with tourism revenue reaching DKK 1.2 billion (US$200 million) per annum in 2014. There were 16.6% more overnight stays that year. The cathedral attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year and the Viking Ship Museum attracted 200,000 visitors in the year 2000.
The city has been deemed one of the best places to have a shopping experience by Denmark. Besides a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and cafés, Roskilde’s shopping center RO’s Torv on Københavnsvej houses 70 stores in one building.
The oldest restaurant in Roskilde is the Raadhuskælderen. Its salmon steak with tartar sauce and grilled chicken dishes are among its many popular items. Also worth checking out is La Brasserie on Algade, Gimle Musikcafe on Ringstedgade, which feature live music and is a restaurant pub with an impressive view of the town. The King Kong atop our water tower has a great view to boot. Hotel Prindsen has been around for over 100 years and is tenaciously rooted in history. Richly decorated with ancient wooden floors, the “Nordic style” embraces guests with its sophisticated splendor while sharing that most famous Danish authors’ suite. Scandic Hotel Roskilde is a chain-run hotel with 98 rooms established in 1989 and with an 18-room inn dating to 1727 in the Svogerslev area, about 2.5 miles to the west.
Cityscape
Roskilde is a town in Denmark with a lot to offer. The old town, Stændertorvet, can be found just south of the city’s cathedral. The place is centered around the square and has many historic street plans that are preserved through nearby Skomagergade, Algade, and Hestetorvet. The buildings there were massively rebuilt Great parks run along the entire south side of Roskilde Fjord, which is right on the edge of the city and also acts as a natural barrier.
The old town of Rønne is bordered by the railway line and the central station, which runs across the entire city. There are many commercial buildings and apartment blocks here, which will continue to be the main attraction for visitors for years to come. The residential areas of Himmelev and Veddelev just east and north of the city have grown up around the former. Roskilde University has opened up Trekroner with the intention for it to be a mixed-use area. It is currently home to about 3,500 houses and is expected to gain more in the coming years. This new city in Frederiksberg is a great place to live!
The residential district of Sankt Jørgensbjerg, with the beautiful surrounding hills, is one of the first aspects one notices when one enters the city. It dates back to Viking times and became part of Roskilde in 1938.
Finally, Roskilde Municipality is developing a new quarter south of the city in an area where at one time stood a factory. The area will be 25 ha (62 acres) and will have all of the amenities that you could ever need for a modern facility. Since the fairgrounds where the Roskilde Festival is held are just a 2-minute walk away, there are plans for establishing creative companies and housing to attract young people. In April of 2016, a new museum called “Ragnarock” opened!
Education and sport
Roskilde University is a university in Denmark that was founded in 1972. It is located in the Trekroner district of Roskilde, which got its name from a cabin on the rail line that ran between Copenhagen and Roskilde. It hosts over 9,000 international students every year from all over the world. Roskilde University has dormitory-style housing. The university boasts about 7,600 students, 630 teachers, and 380 workers. Copenhagen University’s buildings were designed by Danish architect Preben Hansen but were first offered for use in 1972.
Founded in 1020 to educate priests for the cathedral, Roskilde Cathedral School is possibly the oldest school in Denmark. The school moved into larger premises in 1969 which was done to accommodate an increasing number of pupils. The Danish Meat Trade College was founded in 1964 to help educate people in the meat industry. It offers vocational training courses in industrial slaughter, retail butchering, sausage making, nutrition, and the meat service sector. Training is offered to kitchen staff, waiters, cooks, and bakers. The school employs about 150 teachers and supporting staff. Courses are also available for international students. There is a hostel with accommodation for some 200 students.
Transport
The principal road running through Roskilde is Danish national road 21, better known as Holbæk Motorway, which connects the city to the capital in the east. The international airport is located in Røsnild just a 10-minute drive away. There are also many museums and restaurants nearby. Copenhagen’s city center is connected to southern Zealand, Falster Island, and the islands of Lolland. It also connects to Roskilde University. The municipality includes the station Trekroner serving both universities. Roskilde Station is Denmark’s oldest railway station and the first in the country to be constructed of stone. Construction began in 1847 and trains began service the following year.
Roskilde Airport is the main airport for Roskilde. Since 1973, there has also been a smaller local airport, originally used for training and flight instruction but now also used for light aircraft. It’s about 40 minutes away by train from Copenhagen Airport if you’re coming in from there. AI pilots are in development, with plans to make it even more affordable going into use. A lack of clear commitment from carriers has so far caused these plans to be postponed. The airport handles up to 100,000 operations per year with mostly small aircraft coming in for school flights. Military passenger services at Copenhagen Airport have been utilizing the services of aerial search-and-rescue helicopters since the 80s. The service has always been used in case of emergencies but provides a valuable function to those who need it most. However, there are now plans to close the military facilities in 2017 or 2018.
Healthcare
Roskilde Præhospital, founded in 1855, has 437 beds for in-patients and several specialist wards. Since its foundation, it has been continuously modernized and expanded over the years. In recent years, more than ever, medical facilities are expanding based on the use of new technology. While a large number of technological advancements have been made in cardiology, a small number have been made in hematology and oncology in the past few years. Roskilde University work alongside the hospital in the fields of biomedical research, health services research, scientific cooperation with industry, and pharmaceutical biology. The Land of Legends
The Centre for Historical-Archaeological Research and Communication (CHARM) is located a few kilometers outside of Roskilde. It’s the official name of the 106-acre open-air museum, which is Denmark’s gateway to archaeology.
