Viborg Overview
The city of Viborg lies in central Jutland, Denmark, and is the capital of both Viborg municipality and Region Midtjylland. It also has the distinction of being the seat of the Western High Court, which is one of three high courts in Denmark; this particular court covers all areas west from Falster to some point west of Stevns. Viborg is Denmark’s second-largest city, covering about 3.3% of the country’s total land area.
History
Viborg is one of the oldest cities in Denmark. This led to it being central to many important decisions and was a major hub for trade, religious matters, and war strategies. The name of Viborg is taken from two old Norse words, translating into a “sacred place” and “fort”.

Sights
Viborg Cathedral is well-known for its long history. The cathedral took more than 50 years to complete but has undergone several rebuilds throughout its lengthy lifespan. The original crypt remains the only building remnant from the first cathedral, which burned down in 1187. The cathedral is a massive spiritual center that has been providing Christian worship for centuries. Recently, restoration work was completed to provide people with a place of peace and beauty to pray in. The new additions to the home of worship are some of the best works in recent history and are among the most beautiful places on Earth! The Skovgaard Museum is famous for its many paintings by Danish painter Joakim Skovgaard, which depict stories from the Bible. The museum was founded in 1937 and the building next to it is called Cathedral.
Viborg was founded as a city in the late 12th century. The Black Friars’ church is a Gothic structure from the early 13th century and is one of the few visible remains of Viborg’s past.
Sports
As one of Denmark’s top cities for sports, Viborg has always been widely known. It has hosted several youth international level competitions over the years, including the 2007 World Rowing Junior Championships and 2009 Nordic Combined Junior Championships. It started with handball, a popular sport in Denmark, when the women’s handball team became one of the best five clubs in Europe, and continued when both the men’s handball team and the professional football team established themselves in their respective leagues. From 1998-2008, Viborg FF was a member of the Danish Superliga. They reached an all-time high in 2000 when they won the Danish Premier League Cup.
Viborg hosts the annual Haervejsmarchen international two-day walking festival, which regularly attracts 8,000 participants, including many from outside Denmark. It includes marked routes of distances of up to 45 kilometers a day. The walk is affiliated with Harvestern International (Harvester).
Education
Viborg is the location of several educational institutions, including Viborg Katedralskole (cathedral school), which is Denmark’s oldest educational institution. It was founded around 960 AD. The school celebrated its 900th birthday in 2000. The church needed to educate boys and young men to enter into the church’s service and youth were their main target. Many enrollment opportunities existed, and the school was set up in a way that allowed for caring guidance from teachers. Today, our international education system has been taken into consideration by various countries that have made it mandatory for all children in school for four years. Today, we look back on many moments from the school’s past. The current majestic building was built in 1926 to accommodate a larger number of students and later a dormitory was added to house the rising number of students from outer regions or islands not close to a gym. The dorm is popular for students trying to “get away from home,” but the need for this type of service from Viborg has been declining since it now has four gymnasiums in town, which students can instead choose.
Viborg is also home to The Animation Workshop, a company that educates students about animation techniques. They’ve helped achieve official recognition from the Danish government before and offer good opportunities for talented people.
