Malmo Overview

The city of Malmö is located along the coast of southern Sweden. A long bridge and tunnel connecting to Copenhagen, Denmark, lies at the eastern end of the resund Bridge. Lilla Torg, in the center of the city, is a cobblestone square with cafes, half-timbered houses, and shops selling local handicrafts. An exhibit of nature, history, and art can be found at Malmö Castle, a fortress constructed by King Christian III of Denmark in the 16th century.

History

The first written mention of Malmö dates back to 1275. Approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the northeast, it was a fortified quay or ferry berth of the Archbishop of Lund. For centuries, Malmö has been the second-largest city in Denmark. Its original name was Malmhaug (with alternate spellings), meaning “Ore Hill” or “Gravel pile.” Alternatively, a maiden was ground up on the town square in a mill based on an even more gruesome tale. A millstone placed on the town square in 1538 would have given the name ‘Mal Mö,’ which means ‘Ground up the maiden.’

With a population of approximately 5,000, Malmö became one of Denmark’s largest and most visited cities in the 15th century. The German Hanseatic League frequented this city as a marketplace, and its flourishing herring fishery made it the most important town along the Resund. A griffin gules is displayed on argent with a griffin argent, based on Eric’s Arms from Pomerania granted in 1437. Until 1660, the griffin’s head was a symbol of Malmö that extended to the entire province of Skne

The new citadel was built on the beach south of town in 1434. Malmöhus was not established until the mid-16th century when it took its current form. Malmö was Sweden’s most fortified city, but only Malmöhus survived the fortifications.

In the 16th century, the Protestant Reformation spread Lutheran teachings, and Malmö was one of the first cities in Scandinavia to convert (1527–1529).

As a result of the Treaty of Roskilde with Denmark, which was signed in 1658, Malmö and Skneland came under Swedish control. Danish troops besieged Malmö for a month in June 1677, but they could not prevail.

Geography

The city of Malmö lies near the southwestern tip of Sweden, in Skne County, at 13°00′ east and 55°35′ north.

The city is part of the global resund region and is connected to Copenhagen, Denmark, by the resund Bridge. Upon its opening on 1 July 2000, the Bridge measured 8 kilometers (5 miles) in length (the total length of the link is 16 km), with the towers reaching 204.5 meters (670.9 feet) in height. In addition to Helsingborg-Helsinger ferry connections further north, most ferry connections have been terminated.

Climate

Malmö has an oceanic climate, like the rest of southern Sweden (Cfb). Despite its northern location, the weather is mild compared to other areas at similar latitudes, mainly due to the Gulf Stream and its westward position on the Eurasian landmass. Midsummer daylight lasts 17 and 31 minutes in its northern latitude, while midwinter daylight lasts only around seven hours.

Transport

The resund Line connects Malmö to Copenhagen, and Copenhagen Airport, every 20 minutes (hourly late at night). In addition to domestic Swedish destinations, charter flights, and low-cost carriers, Malmö Airport has its airport.

In conjunction with the resund Bridge, the motorway system has been integrated; the European route E20 crosses the Bridge and then, together with the European route E6, follows the west coast of Sweden from Malmö-Helsingborg to Gothenburg.

Ports

Two industrial harbors serve the city; one is still active and is the largest Nordic port for car imports.

Malmö S-Train

In December 2018, circular trains connected seven stations.

Proposed metro

A 22 km tunnel under the Resund would connect Malmö with Copenhagen Metro.

Demographics

As of December 2010, the urban area had 280,415 residents. By the 1 January 2003 census, the population had risen to 265,481, surpassing the previous record of 265K. A milestone of 300,000 people was reached in Malmö on 27 April 2011. A total of 316,588 people lived in the city in 2017 out of 338,230 residents in the municipality.

Religion

Christianity is Malmö’s largest religion, and the Church of Sweden has the largest membership, with 125,697 members in 2019, representing 36% of its population. In Malmö, there are several Catholic communities, including the Church of Our Saviour, Malmö, which has 7,500 members.

Economy

Shipbuilding (Kockums) and construction-related industries, such as concrete factories, were traditionally Malmö’s primary industries. Lund is located 16 kilometers (10 miles) northeast of the region’s leading university, which is also home to the region’s leading hi-tech and pharmaceutical companies.

In the 1970s, Malmö experienced difficult economic times. A budget deficit of more than one billion Swedish krona (SEK) was recorded between 1990 and 1995, resulting in the loss of 27,000 jobs. The unemployment rate in Malmö was the highest in Sweden in 1995.

Sports

  • Football – There are several football teams in Malmö.
  • Ice hockey – Malmö Redhawks are the most outstanding ice hockey team.
  • Handball – H.K. Malmö attracts a fair amount of crowds as a first-division handball team.
  • Rugby – Since 1954, Malmö R.C. has won six national titles in rugby union.
  • Gaelic football – Malmö has also introduced Gaelic football.
  • Additional Team and Individual Sport – Baseballs and American and Australian footballs are notable team sports. Along with east Asian martial arts and boxing, badminton and athletics are the most popular non-team sports.
