Södertälje Overview
The city of Södertälje is located in Södermanland and Stockholm County, Sweden, and serves as the seat of the municipality of Södertälje. Approximately 72,704 people live there as of 2017. A lock in the Södertälje Canal connects Södertälje with the Baltic Sea at the confluence of Mälaren and the Baltic Sea.
Ancient history
The first people reached Södertälje around 4000 BC during the Stone Age. The peasant culture is believed to have come to this area around 3000 BC when they formed settlements. The post-glacial rebound narrowed the strait between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea around 1500 to 400 BC. The sand ridge forced boats to be towed, creating employment opportunities. As a result, trade and service developed.
A journey by Ansgar to Birka in 829 to Christianize Sweden passed through Södertälje. According to Adam of Bremen’s work Gesta Hammaburgensis Ecclesiae Pontificum, Södertälje first appears in historical sources in 1070, when he describes the road between Skara and Birka. However, the area had been inhabited for a long time before that. It was in the 1300s that Södertälje was granted city privileges.
At Slottsholmen, Telge Hus castle was constructed in the 1300s. The county of Telgehus was administered from here between 1318 and 1527. Svartlösa district and parts of Knebo, Hölebo, and Hölebo were included in the county. There was a moat surrounding the castle, according to archaeological excavations. The northwestern shore of Slottsholmen still has parts of it visible.
Initially, the city was known as Tälje (there are several spellings, including Telge, Tale, and Tälga). The prefix Söder’ south’ was added in 1622 to differentiate the city from Norrtälje, which had just been founded 110 km northeast of the city. The modern spelling of Statistics Sweden was introduced in 1900.
St. Olof was the first figure to appear on the city’s coat of arms. Ragnhild of Tälje (Swedish: Sankta Ragnhild) replaced him at the beginning of the 17th century. In Södertälje, her relics are said to have been buried after she visited Rome and Jerusalem.
As Duke of Södermanland, Duke Charles (subsequently King Charles) invested heavily in Södertälje as a commercial and maritime city, contributing to its growth. In the south of the town, a port was built. In addition to shipping and trade, industrial manufacturing did not begin in the city until the 1740s.

Yrkeshögskolan (English: Higher Vocational Education) also provides education.
Culture
Oktoberteatern at Marenplan is Södertälje’s primary theatre, which presents new productions yearly. In 1928, the venue opened its doors. This building originally housed a cinema called Castor but was converted into a theatre in 1984. Sweden’s only Finnish-language theatre company is located in Södertälje, Teatteri Kipinä.
Sports
The Södertalje BBK, or SBBK, is a top basketball team in the country, and the Södertalje KINGS have won three Swedish championships. A total of ten golds have been won by the male team Södertalje KINGS and twelve by the female team Telge Basket. SBBK has won 132 Swedish Championships since 1968. SBBK plays its home games in Täljehallen.
Currently playing in Sweden’s second-highest league – HockeyAllsvenskan – is Södertälje SK, a classic and successful ice hockey team with Scaniarinken as their home arena. Syrianska FC and Assyriska FF are successful football clubs founded in 1974 and 1977, respectively. Södertälje Fotbollsarena is the same arena where both teams play.
As a pioneering Rugby league team in the Swedish National Rugby League, Södertälje Storm Rugby League club was formed in 2015.

The region of Södertälje, as well as Stockholm, enjoys a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) with four distinct seasons. A high northerly latitude causes daylight to vary widely in the city, from more than 18 hours during midsummer to only around 6 hours during midwinter.
