Gavle Overview

Gävle is the seat of Gävle Municipality and the capital of Gävleborg County in Sweden. A total of 77,586 people lived in the city in 2020, making it the 13th most populous city in Sweden. Norrland’s oldest city, founded in 1446 by Christopher of Bavaria, is the oldest in the historical Norrland.

History

Gävle is thought to derive its name from the Old Swedish word gavel, which means river bank, and refers to the Gavleån (Gävle River). Gävle-ägarna means “Gavel-owners” in Swedish. The earliest settlement was called that. In the past, this name was shortened to Gävle, Gefle, and then Gävle.

It was only in 1446 that Gävle received its official town charters, and it was first mentioned in official history books in 1413.

For a long time, the only wooden buildings in Gävle were small, low buildings with turf or shingle roofs. Boat houses dotted the banks of Gavleån, Lillån, and Islandsån. Until the 18th century, the town was centered around three important buildings: the church, the regional palace, and the town hall.

Gävle has been engulfed in flames three times in the past 300 years. The town was rebuilt with straight streets and rectangular city blocks after the fire of 1776. There was also an increase in the number of stone and brick houses. A town fire that destroyed approximately 8,000 homes and 350 farms in 1869 caused a population of around 10,000 to lose their homes. The town north of Gavlen burned down, and all the buildings south of Gavleån survived. A historic reserve, Gamla Gefle, has been preserved between the old town’s museum and library.

With its large esplanades and green spaces, Gävle developed its characteristic grid plan after the fire. As a result, it has become a green town with wide avenues. Developing this project was primarily intended to prevent the further spreading of town fires.

Geography

Gävle is a city in northern Sweden near the mouth of the Dalälven river, which feeds the Baltic Sea. The latitude and longitude of Gävle are 60 degrees north and 17 degrees east, which are the same as those of Helsinki and Vienna. Six municipalities border Söderhamn, Ockelbo, Sandviken, Heby, Tierp, and Älvkarleby. A twenty-kilometer drive west of Gävle lies Sandviken.

Climate

In Gävle, the winter highs are just below freezing, and the summer highs are slightly above 20 °C (68 °F). The average annual precipitation is about 600 millimeters (23.62 inches). Despite its maritime influence, Gävle is classified as humid continental (Dfb) under the Köppen climate classification.

Economy

Copper and iron began to be exported from the port of Gävle during the 15th century, increasing trade. The government prohibited sailing to foreign ports from Gävle and a few other ports to ensure that all business went via Stockholm.

With many shipping companies and shipyards, Gävle was one of the most important ports and merchant towns during the 16th century.

In 1787, Gävle was granted “free and unrestricted sailing rights” between foreign ports. As a result, trade increased in buildings, industrial developments, marketing, and shipping.

A few shipping companies and shipyards remain today, but the port remains essential. In addition, it is one of Sweden’s top ten most common ports, with over 1000 ships calling each year.

Culture

Despite its size, Gävle has a large and well-nourished cultural life, being home to musicians such as The Deer Tracks and The Sound of Arrows. A European Capital of Culture application was filed for the city in 2014.

Sports

In addition to football (Gefle IF), Gävle also has teams competing in ice hockey (Brynäs IF) and floorball (Gävle GIK).

Education

There are currently 16,000 students enrolled at the University College of Gävle. It offers over 800 courses and around 50-degree programs in technology, social sciences, and natural sciences. Among its research topics are “Building Environment” (“Byggd miljö”) and “Health in the Workplace” (“Hälsofrämjande arbetsliv”). Several courses are offered in English and are open to both Swedish and international students.
