Halmstad Overview
Halmstad is a port, university, industrial, and recreational city in the province of Halland on the Swedish west coast. Halmstad is the city of Halland County‘s capital and Halmstad Municipality’s seat.
History
Originally part of the Kingdom of Denmark, Halmstad received its first city charter in 1307, and the city celebrated its 700th anniversary in 2007. “Vvraby” upstream on Nissan is the location of the oldest ruins of that first town, just south and quite close to the present-day regimental buildings. One can still see the church’s remains between a former landfill and a defunct brick industry.
During the 1320s, the town moved to its present location. The city had two monasteries, and the St. Nikolai church was constructed during the 15th century. Swedish forces fought several battles, sieges, and occupations in Halland.
Halmstad was the location of the final selection of the Union King during the Kalmar Union that lasted between 1397 and 1523.
Christian IV of Denmark fortified Halmstad at the end of the 16th century, and as part of the defenses, Nissan was built as a crescent-shaped fort.
In Halmstad’s history, 1619 is an important date. Christian IV and King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden met at the castle in March of that year. They celebrated the payment of the ransom in total over a week. Halmstad was destroyed by fire in August of the same year.
