Helsingborg Overview
Sweden’s Helsingborg is located on the west coast of Denmark, across the Resend Strait. There is only one remaining element of a medieval fortress, the Kärnan tower, in its old town. The Gothic Church of St. Mary dates back to the 1300s and is nearby. With its tall clock tower and stained-glass windows, the neo-Gothic Town Hall depicts essential episodes in the city’s history.
History
Helsingborg is one of the oldest in modern Sweden, and a permanent settlement has been established there since 21 May 1085. Its geographic location at the narrowest part of the strait made Helsingborg an essential place for Denmark, which at that time controlled both sides. Eric of Pomerania introduced the Sound Dues in 1429 for all trading vessels passing through the Sound between Helsingør and Helsingborg. A large portion of the Danish Crown’s income was derived from this source. Initially directed against the Hanseatic League, the tax did not apply to crossing traffic, like fishermen.
Helsingborg became part of Sweden due to the Dano-Swedish War (1657–1658) and the Treaty of Roskilde. Peder Winstrup, the bishop of the Diocese of Lund, led a delegation on 5 March 1658 to welcome King Charles X Gustav of Sweden to the Scanian lands. Barely 1,000 people were living in the town at the time.
As a result of its location on a conflict-ridden border, Helsingborg faced several problems. Despite recapturing Scania twice, Denmark was unable to hold it. In 1710, 14,000 Danish soldiers landed near Helsingborg in an attempt to retake Scania. On 10 March, the Battle of Helsingborg was fought outside the city, which had been badly damaged. Despite only having 1,321 inhabitants in 1770, the city took a long time to recover.
As he traveled from Paris to Stockholm, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, Marshal of France and Crown prince-elect of Sweden (later king Charles XIV John), took his first step on Swedish soil in Helsingborg on 20 October 1811.
Climate
Stockholm has an oceanic climate (Cfb), which is typical for southern Sweden, despite its mild winters. Despite the significant temperature changes between seasons, Helsingborg rarely experiences a meteorological winter, with mean temperatures averaging just above freezing in January and February.
