Helsingor Overview

Denmark’s capital of Copenhagen, also known as Elsinore, is located on the coast of the Øresund strait and features medieval Kronborg Castle. The play “Hamlet” was based on this castle. The M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark is filled with several unique exhibits including a huge steel sculpture named Han. This piece is on display to the public, and events are hosted in the Culture Yard as well.

Denmark is bordered by Sweden and it also touches the Baltic Sea on the northeastern part of The Sound. Helsingør was granted a charter in 1426, which allowed for many years of continued economic prosperity before fees were abolished in 2018.

Population

had a population of 62,686 on 1 January 2018.

History

One of the names that are most commonly associated with Helsingør is that of “Hel.” And while naming the town “Helsingör” was simply too long and complicated, Halsån cuts through the center of Helsingör, meaning “neck” or “narrow strait.” “Helsinger” is an early Danish term for a strait. King Valdemar the Victorious‘s Liber Census Daniæ from 1231 mentioned “the people of the strait,” not to be confused with the Helsings of Hälsingland in Sweden. The land on which the fort is found shows that it might have been built there earlier and later fortified when Danish forces were building a jetty in the harbor. People in 19th century Britain used toponyms to explain place names with features of the landscape. There is another tradition that existed before this one and involved reading place names as eponymous. The infamous movie monster, or several, Helsing is quite abundant in traces of lost legends in the Nordic countries. Although not the first of his name, Alfgeirson is one of the three sons of Gandalf and the father of Harald Fairhairs’ character. His name would have been Helsing if he had been given a more traditional Icelandic name which means either “Erl” or “Hróðvitnir”. Also, Helsingä/Helsinki in Finland and Hälsingland in Norrland, refer to Helsing, as “the Land of the Helsings,” which makes the landscape theory of the name of Helsingborg less likely.

In its earliest days, the town that is today known as Helsinki was founded in the 1420s by Danish king Eric of Pomerania. After he established the Sound Dues, which meant all ships passing through had to pay a toll, which represented up to two-thirds of Denmark’s total revenue. Eric of Pomerania was an ambitious man who built a castle in 1611 that eventually ended up as Kronborg. The tax collected made it more dependent on trade, which generated additional revenue for the Danish Crown. In 1672, Helsingør became the third-largest town in Denmark. This was attributed to its long and fanciful history by Johan Isaksson Pontanus (Rerum Danicarum Historica, 1631).

Transport

The car ferry line between Helsingør and Helsingborg, Scania, Sweden is the busiest in the world with over 70 departures daily. The route has been sailed by several shipping lines since it was established in 1874. From the station, trains depart to Copenhagen every 20 minutes. The car ferry terminal is connected to the town’s main railway station and can also be boarded from Gilleleje. There are 6 more train stops inside the city and connected suburbs. Besides Helsingør station, the ferry terminal and Snekkersten station trains also stop at Espergærde, Mordrup, and Gilleleje among other places. The E47 Motorway starts just outside Copenhagen, but it’s much easier to get around the area by taking a bus than driving.

Industrialization

But when the ships started to be built in Elsinore, the shipyard gradually lost its importance and was left with a small reminder of what once existed (Kronborg Castle). It was founded in 1882 and reached its peak at 3,600 employees in 1957. The last ship left the shipyard in 1983, after which it closed due to significant losses.

The family-owned brewery that started brewing beer in 1840 became the second Danish brewery to ship bottled beer after just three years.

Post-industrialisation

After the Industrial Revolution, communities all over the world had to find ways to inspire creativity and students. In Denmark, Helsingør wanted to test that out — they decided to redefine their town as a place of culture and creativity, called “Kulturhavn Kronborg.” Kulturhavn Kronborg is a major tourist attraction where anyone can find an interest in Danish culture. It has hosted exhibits, concerts, and conventions since it opened in 2013. William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” has been performed annually in its courtyard since 1937. Aside from the historical significance, many tourists and residents enjoy the outdoor productions. The play’s title role is one of the most sought-after roles in all of theater. You can find acclaimed actors playing it over the years including Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Christopher Plummer, Derek Jacobi, and in 2009 Jude Law. Kulturhavn Kronborg is a new cultural center and public library located in the old dockyard. It opened in 2010. The former dry dock now houses the Danish Maritime Museum.

Climate

In the past month, the temperature ranged from 29°F to 71°F over 65% of the days. Only 19% of days had a higher mean temperature than 80°F and 28% had a lower mean temperature than 15°F. When visiting from June until August, there’s still a lot to do during the spring and fall months. As has been said before, the summers are simply too hot in Denmark for many sustained outdoor activities but are also when many other interesting events take place like parades and festivals.

What is Helsingør known for?

The castle of Kronborg is one of Denmark’s most impressive homes. It was also the inspiration for William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet.
