Jönköping Overview

The city of Jönköping is located on the shores of Lake Vättern in southern Sweden. One of its most prominent features is its long lakeside beach, Vätterstranden. With its neo-Gothic design and towering spire, Sofia Church stands in the city’s center. Local fairy-tale illustrator John Bauer’s artworks can be found at the Jönköping County Museum nearby. There is a waterbird colony in the Erstad marsh on the lake island of Visingsö.

Jönköping is the seat of Jönköping Municipality, which has 143,579 residents (2022) and is Småland’s most populous municipality. A population of 367,064 lives in Jönköping County, which is also the seat of Jönköping City. A district court, an appeals court, and the Swedish National Courts Administration are all in Jönköping.

History

At the natural crossroads of routes following the Nissan and Lagan rivers, Jönköping is an old trading center (Köping). Because of its geographical location at the southern end of lake Vättern, which divides these two provinces, the town is the only place in the world where the two provinces are connected.

On 18 May 1284, Jönköping became the first City in Sweden to be granted its rights by king Magnus Ladulås, who ruled mainly from Vättern’s largest island Visingsö. “Jön” is derived from a creek in Talavid called Junebäcken, situated in the city’s western part. Secondly, as previously mentioned, it refers to a marketplace or a trading center.

The city’s geographical location also made it vulnerable to attacks via river routes leading south, mainly from the Danes. The provinces of what is now southern Sweden – Scania, Halland, and Blekinge – belonged to Denmark then. It was plundered and burned several times before it was fortified in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Matchsticks were the primary industry in Jönköping between 1845 and 1970. Because the phosphorus match could be struck against any surface to ignite it, these matches became very popular in 1831. Their main problem was that they ignited too quickly, caused a lot of accidents, and were toxic. Gustav Erik Pasch patented a new invention in 1844, “Safety matches – Strike only the box.” Gustav Erik Pasch separated the chemicals in the matchhead. He placed the phosphorus on a surface outside the box for striking ignition to prevent the matches from igniting so quickly. Carl Frans Lundström and Johan Edvard improved Pasch’s patent. The new Safety matches were then manufactured in their factory in Jönköping. Many companies have their central warehouses (such as Elkjp, IKEA, Electrolux, and Husqvarna), making it an essential Nordic logistics center.

Climate

Between 1961 and 1990, Jönköping had a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. It is important to note that the window between subarctic and oceanic is very narrow in this marine-influenced climate type. The climate has tended to resemble a freezing marine environment in recent years.
