Sip in Vrbnik 

There are many reasons to visit Vrbnik, a medieval town that’s set on a cliff overlooking the sea and combines history with natural wonders. It’s one of the only places in Croatia that was never deeply influenced by tourism, so when you visit it feels like you’re exploring old Europe or an untouched corner of the world. Those who are interested in European history may want to visit the Glagolitic manuscripts found at the Parish Church, which represent a dead Slavic language. Those who like beaches may also want to head over to Kozica Beach. It’s worth taking the time to taste Žlahtina, a golden-colored dry white wine that is only grown in these parts. Stocked in every local restaurant, it’s available for sale from Gospoja, run by the local Toljanić family, who are also running an agricultural co-op as well as a tavern on the prominent Vrbnik square of Škujica. They also own a wine-tasting outlet and offer a 22-room boutique.

Spelunk at Biserujka 

Near the village of Rudine, the cave of Biserujka is probably no challenge for an experienced caver. However, it’s well worth a visit – spookily-shaped stalactites and stalagmites fill what’s known as the Great Hall, 13 meters (42.5 feet). Sometimes even concerts are given in Biserujka’s amphitheater. This is why we have an educational trail that offers 30-minute visits around the area, taking visitors to Slivanjska Cove and presenting them with sea views.

Follow the Baška Glagolitic Path 

Almost resembling Runic in its peculiarity, the Glagolitic alphabet is an early Slavic/Russian script devised by the same people as Cyrillic. Croatia was first mentioned in texts dating back to medieval times: find the earliest mention of Croatia in Croatian, dating back to Baška. Along to celebrate this, academics put up 34 sculptures that spelled out the Glagolitic alphabet. They’re not sure of all letters, but that’s 41 in total! The hike starts in the heights of Baška, then heads to the waterfront where it reaches Stara Riva. From this vantage point, you can see the salt-shaker shape of Glagolitic Omega.

Go gastro at Rivica 

Krk is Croatian’s most popular island and its real culinary gem is found in Njivica resort which is just past Malinska on the northwest coast towards Rijeka Airport. Mara and Ivio, grandparents to the current owners, set up a bed and breakfast in Njivica when it was still a fishing village and before Kvarner became as famous as its last guests. Times change, and so grandson Dražen and his wife Nikolina have lent a contemporary culinary touch to seafront Rivica. It’s damn good and full of the latest gastronomic trends. The menu is very extensive and there’s something for everyone, so take your time perusing. Shellfish features prominently, for example, white buzara stew with venus clams or grilled spiny lobster in aurora sauce. Or go for the beef chee. The desserts are the perfect finish. When you’re leaving, don’t forget to cast your eye over the guestbook, where you’ll find signatures going back to Maya and Ivo’s day.

Hang out with the Frankopans 

A fearful bunch that occupied Krk after the only Venetian family left in the 1100s, the Frankopans also built a fortified square in Krk town named (but not on Google Maps) “Trg Kamplin.” Two towers, round and square meld with the fortifications – the watchtower was an Austrian afterthought – and provide the backdrop for a summer series of outdoor concerts under the stars. The music here is generally pretty mainstream, but the ambiance more than makes up for any lack of edge. The theatre programming also features a classical show or two.

Trawl the Adriatic 

The Baška Aquarium offers an educational and interactive experience for visitors interested in marine life. Located on Korčula Island, it is one of the few Croatian aquariums to offer a glimpse at what lies beneath the water’s surface. Baška’s is probably the best, mainly because of the range of creatures you’ll come face to face with. Grouper fish and morays have something otherworldly about them, and all kinds of fierce spiked and clawed beings make you wonder just how on earth. There are 400 types of snails and mussels also on display but the star of the show is usually seahorses. Don’t promise your kids Nemo though – our focus is all about Croatia’s waters!

Carouse by Krk harbor 

Casa del Padrone is where urbanites get their groove during the hottest summer nights in Krik town. This long-established ice cream parlor, beach bar, and nightclub have had to change with the times. Nowadays they also provide jazz, house, and music on their two-floor indoor space as well as their terrace overlooking the water. One of the most romantic places in Auckland, the Viaduct Harbour is a great place for couples to enjoy breathtaking views and quality cocktails.

Meet the monks 

This Franciscan monastery has been around for centuries and has seen its share of changes over the years. The monks here have dealt with a lot, but they’re still running the place today. Visitors can come to the grounds and park but are required to show decorum when entering the building. The effort is worth it: visitors will get a glimpse of the precious exhibits inside, like an extensive library. The collection here is remarkable and includes a 1,000-year-old Hebrew Bible, an extremely rare edition of Ptolemy’s Atlas, and many artifacts in the old Slavic tongue of Glagolitic. The boat ride from the nearest marina will take about 10 minutes.

Learn to wakeboard 

Originally called skurfing, wakeboarding is a mix of water skiing, surfing, and snowboarding. It involves being towed on the water by a motor boat at speeds of around 30kph (18mph). Here at the Wakeboard Center Krk, near Kornić, a series of cables pulls riders along and beginners who make up the majority of visitors here are shown how to place their feet in the fittings and the right poses when going round. Rental includes life jackets. You could spend your holiday at the Recreational Offshore Fishing Facility. The facility is open from Late April to Late September and we also have a waterfront restaurant where you can watch your family via our live webcam.

Dine with a view 

it’s not just the scenic panorama that makes this place a great site. Nada Restaurant – is a beautiful place to enjoy delicious Italian food. Camps Bay, Western Cape Nada does justice to the location, with divine lamb and pasta šurlice. They also offer blue backdrop picnics atop the sea-front terrace. because the owners look after two wine-producing facilities, one in Krk and one on Baška; Žlahtina also has a separate bar area for those who want to freshen up before dining.
