History
According to Medieval Scandinavian laws, the Lionga ting assembly was essential in Östergötland. Lionga ting was located along Eriksgata, though its exact location is unknown. As the name implies, there was a “-köping” market.
As one of Sweden’s oldest dioceses, Linköping dates back to 1082, second only to Skara in Sweden (in terms of its boundaries before 1658). “List of Florence” (Lionga. Kaupinga) first mentions the diocese in 1104. The monastery of Vreta Kloster near Roxen, north of Linköping, was established in 1128. The oldest parts of the cathedral also date to that time (although it has been altered many times since then, with the eye-catching tower with copper roofing being a 19th-century creation). Swedish archdioceses were attempted in Linköping several times, but Uppsala was chosen instead when they finally succeeded in 1164.
A coronation was held in the cathedral in 1251 for Valdemar Birgersson. Several essential diets were held in the town during Gustavus Vasa’s reign.
Linköping was no exception to the trend of religious centers becoming educational centers. There has been a cathedral school since 1266. As the third oldest gymnasium in Sweden, Linköping cathedral school was founded in 1627.
Linköping also saw the final dispute settlement between King Sigismund III Vasa and his uncle Duke Charles, who won the battle of Stångebro (today, a sports field near central Linköping) on 25 September 1598. This eventually led to the rise to the throne of Charles (de facto at the 1600 Riksdag of the Estates meeting in Linköping and formally four years later) and the end of the short-lived Swedish-Polish personal union, as well as the execution of five of Charles’ political opponents on the main square of Linköping on 20 March 1600.
The Saab aircraft industry formed in 1937, kicking off rapid growth in Linköping. The University of Linköping was founded in the 1960s. Today, the city has become a center for high-technology and software development.

The climate in Linköping is humid continental (Dfb), with maritime influences, which retains significant seasonal variations, but is milder than other areas of the world at similar latitudes.
Demography
The foreign population in Linköping municipality accounted for 10.9 percent of the people in 2000. In 2019, the share reached 23,1 percent, an increase since 2003.

Linköping has strong teams in floorball, volleyball (Linköpings VC), and ice hockey (Linköpings HC (see above), or “Clubmen” as some refer to it). Linköpings FC, which plays in the highest division, was founded by the Linköpings hockey team and Linköpings women’s football team, and two Swedish Cups were won by the team in 2006 and 2014. The indoor sports arena in the city center is home to Linköping Innebandy, the world’s largest floorball club. While several teams compete in the lower leagues, the city lacks a first-class men’s football team.
Politics and government
Sweden held general elections on 14 September 2014 for the Riksdag, all 21 county councils, and 290 municipal assemblies.
The local Social Democrats (S; Social Demokraterna), Green Party (M.P.M.P.; Miljöpartiet), and the Liberal People’s Party (L; Liberalerna, formerly F.P.F.P.; Folk Partiet) formed a coalition majority named “coalition for Linköping” with 40 out of 79 mandates, while the minority opposition in Linköping consists each separate by the Moderate Party(M; Moderaterna), Centre Party(C; Center Partiet), Christian Democrats (Kristdemokraterna), Left Party (V; Vänsterpartiet) and the Sweden Democrats (S.D.S.D.; Sverige Demokraterna).
Economy
Saab is one of the largest employers in Linköping, where the S.A.A.B. Gripen fighter jet is manufactured and the SAAB 340 twin-engine commuter turboprop. With IFS AB, Sectra AB, Cambio Healthcare Systems AB, Motorola, Ericsson, Infor, and many others as their headquarters, the city has a strong presence in information technology. B.T.B.T. Industries, one of Toyota Industries Sweden AB’s subsidiaries, is located near Mjölby, near Linköping.

The station is located on the main southern railway line that connects Stockholm and Malmö with Copenhagen, the Danish capital. Daily connections are available to Amsterdam from Linköping/Saab Airport.
