Lund Overview

Lund is located on the southern tip of Sweden, in the province of Skne. The Lund Cathedral, built in the Romanesque style centuries ago, stands on cobblestones in the old town. There are replicas of buildings from medieval times to the 20th century at the Kulturen open-air museum nearby. The Lund University Historical Museum contains archaeological relics from the Stone and Bronze ages and an extensive collection of coins.

History

Despite its at least thousand-year history, Lund has only been formally established as a city or town for 300 years out of its 2,000-year history. Despite its age, its origins are unclear, but it is believed to have existed by the end of the Viking Age. It was thought that either Sweyn I Forkbeard or his son Canute the Great of Denmark founded the town around 1020. During that time, the area was a part of the Danish kingdom. Recent archaeological discoveries suggest that the first settlement may have been relocated at Uppkra circa 990. In the first century B.C., the Uppkra settlement was established near the present-day village of Uppkra. Lund was moved to its present location by King Sweyn I Forkbeard, about five kilometers (3.1 miles) away. As a result of its new site, which is on a hill and across a ford, Lund had considerable defensive advantages over Uppkra, which was located on the highest point of a vast plain.

Under the rule of Canute the Great, the Danish church was organized. A diocese was established in Lund in 1048 and made an archbishopric in 1104. Scandinavia and even Greenland were included in Lund’s ecclesiastical province. In 1066, Dalby was absorbed into the diocese. Lund Cathedral was similarly founded in 1103 or shortly after that. A separate province of the church was formed, independent of Lund, in 1152 as the Norwegian archdiocese of Nidaros. The archbishop of Lund was nominally subordinate to the archbishop of Sweden, who was appointed in 1164. Lund is still a diocese of the Church of Sweden, known as the diocese of Lund.

Founded by Canute the Saint in 1085, Lund Cathedral School (Katedralskolan) was the first Danish school in the world. There is no better school in Scandinavia or Northern Europe than this one. Several high-ranking politicians and actors were educated there, including Max von Sydow.

The Treaty of Roskilde granted Sweden the possession of Lund in 1658. As a result of the early phases of the Scanian War, it was recaptured by Denmark in 1676. Swedish control of Scania was confirmed in the Peace of Lund later that year following the extraordinarily bloody Battle of Lund just north of the city in 1676. Lund, and therefore Scania, came under Swedish control through a treaty signed in 1720.

Geography

Lund is southwest of Scania, in the country’s largest agricultural district, less than ten kilometers (6.2 miles) from the Öresund Strait. Located on a south-facing slope of the Romele’sen horst, the city rises from the low-lying Höje River in the south to 86 meters (282 feet) above mean sea level in the north. Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, can be seen from the top of Sankt Hans Hill. About 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) southwest of here is the nearest sizeable Swedish city, Malmö. It takes 250 kilometers to reach Gothenburg, 600 kilometers to get to Stockholm, and 1,200 kilometers to reach Ume.

Climate

Lund has an oceanic climate, like the rest of far southern Sweden. As a result of its proximity to the sea, the weather is relatively mild compared to other locations at similar latitudes. Lund has 17 hours of daylight in the summer and only 7 hours during the winter due to its northern latitude.

Demographics

The city’s population has steadily increased over the past century. In 2014, 18.8% of the municipality’s residents were born outside Sweden, and students from Lund University make up a large portion of the city’s population.

Culture

Lund’s culture is characterized by its university education and research, as well as its large student population and student traditions, such as a student theatre group since 1886. Student fraternities called Nations play a significant role in student nightlife.

Formerly a Catholic cathedral and now a Lutheran cathedral, Lund Cathedral is the seat of the bishop of Lund. As well as a city theatre (without its professional ensemble), Lund has several other places for concerts and theatre performances.

Sports

Lund’s men’s and women’s handball teams compete in the top leagues. As part of the 2011 Handball World Championship, Lund hosted matches at Sparbanken Skåne Arena. Lund’s ASK has been one of Sweden’s best chess teams for decades. There are two Division 1 football teams in Lund, Torns IF and Lunds B.K. Hattrick is an online football manager game developed in Lund. Among Sweden’s few rugby clubs, Lugi Rugbyklubb is located in Lund.

Transport

  • Railways – Lund is well served by rail traffic due to its location near a railway junction.
  • Cycling – The cycling infrastructure in Lund has been praised. Parking spaces for bikes are available in the town to the tune of 4,800
  • Buses – A new bus company, Vy Buss, has been handling Lund’s bus network since 2019. Skånetrafiken administers it.
  • Tramway – In 2015, plans were approved for a nearly six-kilometer (3.7-mile) tram network between Lund Central Station and many of the city’s most important workplaces.
  • Airports – Lund is served by Copenhagen Airport, the largest airport in the Nordic region.
  • Major roads – Upon the opening of the E22 between Lund and Malmö in 1953, Lund became part of the motorway network.

Best Things to Do in Lund (Sweden)

  1. Lund Cathedral

    – The cathedral has elements that have not been altered for 900 years, making it Sweden’s most important piece of Romanesque architecture. Primarily visible in the apse and crypt, these oldest parts combine Rhenish and Lombard styles.
  2. Kulturen

    – After Stockholm’s open-air museum, Lund’s is the second-oldest in Sweden. To ensure their preservation, some of the museum’s buildings have been moved to the museum in pieces.
  3. Botanical Garden

    – Since 1690, the University of Lund has maintained a botanical garden. In 1868, it finally settled on its current eight-hectare patch after moving a couple of times. Thousands of species were in the garden even back then, and now there are more than 1,000.
  4. Museum of Sketches for Public Art

    – Experience the creative process of some of the most famous Swedish and international artists at this one-of-a-kind museum. Over 1,000 artists from 30 countries contributed preliminary sketches and models to the exhibition.
  5. Stadsparken

    – The city park was first laid out in 1911, southwest of the center. Stadsparken is for relaxation, exercise, and fun, while the botanical garden is about informative walks.
  6. Lund University Historical Museum

    – The university’s historical museum is the second largest in Sweden, located on Krafts Torg. Numerous medieval liturgical objects are displayed, including Stone Age tools and weapons, Iron Age finds, and coins from the Uppkra settlement.
  7. Drotten Church Ruins

    – During the Reformation in the 15th century, the 51-meter-high church in the center of Lund that was the seat of the archbishopric was demolished. In the 1970s and 1980s, excavations rediscovered the site in good condition, and an underground museum was built to display the remnants of the Lord’s Church and churchyard.
  8. Holy Cross Priory, Dalby

    – The baptismal font, carved from Höör sandstone in the 11th century, is the most beautiful part of this atmospheric Romanesque edifice. There are carvings of human heads and beasts on the base and reliefs of Christ’s baptism on the sides, making this the oldest font still in use in Scandinavia.
  9. Lund University Main Building (Universitetshuset)

    – Lund University was founded in 1666, close to the cathedral, but its origins date back to the 15th century. With a strong reputation for medical research, it has become one of Europe’s most prestigious universities.
  10. Lundagård

    – The green buffer between the cathedral and the University’s Main Building is also a story worth telling. Financial buildings, the royal mint, and Krafts Torg, Lund’s leading trade center and later became a cemetery, were also present.
