Örebro Overview
The Swedish city of Rebro has 124,027 inhabitants, is the seat of the Rebro Municipality, and is the capital of Rebro County. The city is one of Sweden’s most significant inland hubs and the sixth largest in Sweden. This city is near lake Hjälmaren but several kilometers inland along the small river Svartån.
The Oset-Rynningeviken nature reserve, several large shopping malls, Rebro University, a major university hospital, and a medieval castle are at the lakefront.
History
The Royal Charter and city privileges of Rebro date back to 1404.
Rebro is named after the bridge (bro) that crosses the river Svartån where the city is located. It comes from ör, which means ‘gravel (bank).’ By the 13th century, the location had become a natural center of commerce in the Scandinavian Middle Ages. Buildings from the early days include the foundations of the city church, a building that has been modified several times. There are two parts of Rebro; one in the northern part and one in the southern region. The castle occupies the natural center of the city. The castle was built during the reign of King Gustav Vasa in the 1560s under the stewardship of Birger Jarl during the late 13th century. There was a Synod held here in 1529 called Rebro Synod.
Rebro’s history includes the 1810 summit that elected Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte as the Swedish crown prince, which was noted in the nation’s history.
Despite its status as a trade town, Rebro remained small until the second half of the 19th century, when it became a major shoe-making center (see: History of Närke).

Rebro, like the rest of the area around Mälardalen, has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) that is made milder by proximity to water and the Gulf Stream, making it interchangeable with oceanic environments. The summer temperatures occasionally exceed 30°C (86°F), but this does not happen every year, and the winter temperatures seldom exceed five °C (41°F), although frost-free nights sometimes occur. According to weather patterns, July high temperatures range from 20 °C (68 °F) to 26 °C (79 °F), with a mean high of 23.4 °C (74.1 °F) from 2002 to 2014.
