The city, because it has natural advantages like a pleasurable climate, fertile land nearby, and proximity to the Sava river has been inhabited since prehistoric times.

The area of northeastern Croatia known as Galovo recently revealed a rich deposit of the Early Stone Age Starčevo culture in a large number of artifacts. This means that there is this much more evidence to prove that early Neolithic and Bronze Era groups were present.

The first known historical settlement in Brod was established in ancient Roman times. They created a settlement on the road that ran from Pula to Salona by giving travelers a place to stay overnight. But no one knows if Marsonia existed as a postal station, or whether they even had permanent residents at one point.

The Peutinger map refers to Marsonia as Marsonie, while the word “Notitia dignitatum” has Marsonia under the name of “Auxilia Ascaria Tauruno sive Marsonia”. The issue of whether or not Marsonia should be a city has been tackled by the publishers of Ptolemy’s Geography. The first geographer to locate the position of Marsonia at the location of Brod was Abraham Ortelius. He published this information in his atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which was released in Antwerp in 1590. The main objective of his research was to try and figure out the towns that existed in Pannonia at the time and if there was any connection between the names. He believed that Marsonia (the place where Brod is today) could have been in the place where Brod is today.

Peutinger’s map clearly shows the initial location of MARSVNNIA was next to the Sava river. The first Croatian expert who claimed that the Roman province was in the place where Brod is now, is Matija Petar Kaune.
