Umeå Overview

Ume is located in eastern Sweden and is known for its museums and cultural institutions. There is an open-air section of the Västerbottens Museum with historical buildings around the county. In the indoor area, there are exhibits about the indigenous Sami people and traditional skiing techniques. A restaurant and live performances are also available at Guitars – The Museum, which exhibits an extensive guitar collection.

History

The first written mention of Umeå is from the 14th century. Before this time, the northern parts of Sweden, including the counties of Västerbotten and Norrbotten, were primarily settled by nomadic Sami, though not necessarily permanently. There is a theory that the name derives from the Old Norse word ma, which means roaring in the English language. Thus, “The Roaring River” would be the town’s name.

Germanic people settled the Westrobothnian coast by moving upward on the Bothnian Bay by boat, hence the Germanic names of towns and villages. There has been a Germanic settlement in southern Westrobothnia (Ume and Skellefte) since the 14th century, probably as early as the Viking period.

At its beginning, Ume was a parish with a wooden church and a trading post in what is now known as Backen (or Kyrkbacken). The fact that it was located near the coast and on a river contributed to its popularity.

It was the last inhabited place before the northern wilderness took over and included scattered parishes that traded goods originating with the Sami people. However, the king’s chosen location was never developed into a city, and it lost its town privileges in the 1590s.

Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, 1622, founded a new city. Approximately 40 houses were there in 1638. In 1714, the town was attacked by the Russians, and in 1720, it was burned to the ground during the Russian Pillage of 1719-1721. The Russian Army took Ume under Barclay de Tolly in June and August 1809.

After it became a requirement of the government, the town improved the plans for its structure in 1874. The fire of Jun 25, 1888, destroyed much of the eastern parts of Umeå, and at least 2,300 of the 3,000 inhabitants became homeless. Nearly 3,000 silver birch trees were planted along wide avenues following the fire to prevent future fires from spreading. The city is sometimes known as “Björkarnas Stad” or “City of Birches” because of this. As the name suggests, Björklöven means “Birch Leaves” in the language of ice hockey.

Geography

Ume is located south of Västerbotten on the inlet of the Gulf of Bothnia at the mouth of the Ume River. Umeå is located about 600 kilometers north of Stockholm and roughly 400 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Often referred to as the regional center of northern Sweden, it is the largest city in the Stockholm-Uppsala region.

The nearby community of Holmsund serves as its port. From here, a ferry line connects it with the neighboring city of Vaasa (Swedish: Vasa) in Finland. The close connections to Finland affect the city’s population – several Sweden Finns live in Umeå.

Climate

Umeå has a humid continental climate (Dfb), bordering on a subarctic climate (Dfc). Despite the long, freezing winters, the temperatures are usually milder than in areas with more continental climates at the same latitude. The average temperature in January is about seven °C (19 °F), while the average temperature in July is 16 °C (61 °F). Since it is located near a large water body and at a high latitude, summers are warmer than expected.

Population

89,607 (Dec 31, 2016)

Transportation

Two European highways pass through the city (E4 and E12). Vasaplan, in the city center, is the hub of the local bus system, with multiple routes running throughout the city. About four kilometers away from the city center is Umeå Airport. Eight hundred forty-four thousand nine hundred thirty-two passengers passed through the airport in 2010, making it the 7th largest in Sweden.

Culture

In addition to the English-language non-profit Ume Theatre Company, the opera of northern Sweden, the Norrland Opera, is based in the city. As one of the largest Scandinavian jazz festivals, the Ume Jazz Festival takes place annually.

Sports

The city of Umeå currently hosts four major sports clubs. In the 1980s, it was very successful in having IF Björklöven as a men’s hockey team, but it has struggled to be as successful in recent years. In the top Swedish women’s football league, Damallsvenskan, Björklöven plays in the Swedish second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan. As of 2013, IBK Dalen and IKSU have been in the Swedish Championship finals for two consecutive years. In addition, Umedalens IF and Mariehem SK are sports clubs.

In 2011, a baseball and softball team, Umeå Baseball & Softbol|klubb, was founded. Currently, the team plays in Norra Regionserien with two former national team players as coaches.

Education

The city library was recognized as one of the most important in northern Sweden in 1951. The library is given a copy whenever a new book is published in Sweden. Umeå University has approximately 37,000 students and 4,200 employees. The university has attracted many students, from about 50,000 inhabitants in the mid-1960s to 121,032. It continues to expand, with about 1100 new inhabitants yearly, and is now a modern, intellectual city to complement the traditional bases of heavy industry for cities along northern Sweden’s coast.

What is Umea Sweden known for?

Several reasons led to Ume’s selection as the European Capital of Culture in 2014. In addition to its highly regarded museums, the city is known for its entrepreneurial spirit and innovative spirit. This buzzing cultural hub opened its doors in 2014 when Väven opened its doors.

Is Umea worth visiting?

Umeå is a beautiful place to visit all year long. Dog sledding in nearby Vindeln and northern lights sightings are popular winter activities. An 18th-century Västerbotten farm houses Sjungareg rden in Granö during the summer.
