Uppsala Overview

Stockholm is close to Uppsala, which is a city in Sweden. A 15th-century university founded here is known as Uppsala University. Augsburg’s original university building, Gustavianum, now houses the Augsburg Art Cabinet, an elaborate cabinet of curiosities from the 17th century. Nearby is the Carolina Rediviva library, which displays the Silver Bible dating back to the 6th century. Swedish royals such as King Gustav Vasa are buried in Uppsala Cathedral.

History

Uppsala was originally a village a few kilometers north of the current city, now known as Gamla Uppsala (Old Uppsala). The city that is Uppsala today was then known as stra Aros (eastern Aros, as opposed to western Aros). According to Adam of Bremen, the Temple at Uppsala contained magnificent idols of the Norse gods, and the city was the main pagan center of Sweden. Fyrisvellir, the site of the Battle of Fyrisvellir in the 980s, was located on the Kungsängen plains south of Uppsala. In those days, Gamla Uppsala was a port town similar to present-day Uppsala. After being killed outside the church of Stra Aros in 1160, King Eric Jedvardsson was venerated in the Catholic Church as a saint. The Bishop of Uppsala built the present-day Uppsala Cathedral in 1435 after Bystra Aros overtook Gamla Uppsala as the leading regional center in 1274 due to the fire that destroyed Gamla Uppsala’s cathedral in 1274. Gothic-style cathedral with towers reaching 118.70 meters (389.4 feet), one of the largest in northern Europe.

Carl Linnaeus, one of the most renowned scholars of Uppsala University, lived for many years in the city, and his house and garden can still be visited today. It is the oldest university in Scandinavia, founded in 1477. The 16th-century Uppsala Castle is also located in Uppsala. During the 1702 fire, the city suffered extensive damage.

During the 1960s and 1970s, many historic buildings were demolished, as in many Swedish cities, but many still stand, especially in the western part of the city. Arms bearing a lion date back to 1737 and have been updated several times, most recently in 1986. In the Coat of Arms of Sweden, the lion also depicts the royal lion, which needs to be clarified in meaning.

Since 1961, the place has been a part of Uppsala cathedral parish, which is ecclesiastically part of Uppsala parish. Uppsala’s incorporated areas are divided among three parishes: Gamla Uppsala, Helga Trefaldighets, and Varkala. A portion of the town is located in Gottsunda parish after the parish was split up in 1974. As a result of further building expansion, some are also in the Denmark-Funbo parish, where they were before 2010.

Geography

The city is located on the fertile Uppsala flatlands that carry muddy soil and feature the small Fyris River. A glacial ridge of about 30 meters (98 feet) runs parallel to the River Uppsala, the site of the city’s castle, which can be seen from many parts of the town. There are many residential areas within walking distance of Stadsskogen (literally “City Forest”), the city’s central park.

Population

177,074 (Dec 31, 2019)

Uppsala has no civilian airport; however, Arlanda Airport is located about 30 kilometers south of the city. A military airport is located north of Uppsala called Arlanda Airport.

U.L. operates public transportation buses and trains within Uppsala county.

Sports

Uppsala’s largest arena is Fyrishov, Sweden’s fourth most visited, specializing in swimming, sporting events, meetings, and recreation.

The city’s basketball team, Uppsala Basket, is also based at Fyrishov and plays its home games in the Swedish basketball league against former KFUM Uppsala. The Uppsala weightlifting club, Uppsala volleyball companion, Uppsala Judo Club, and Uppsala Simsällskap, Sweden’s oldest swimming club, Uppsala Simsälllskap have a variety of sports clubs.
