There is no evidence of a special pre-Christian significance for the site, as was believed a century ago. In a nearby village, Hov, there may have been a pagan cultic center for Värend.

Since the 11th century, the city has been an episcopal see, but its city charter was issued in 1342 by Magnus Eriksson. In about 1300, the cathedral of St Sigfrid was built, and then it was restored. Besides that, there were few pious institutions in Växjö during the Middle Ages. In 1485, a Franciscan monastery was founded. 1318 marked the first mention of a Holy Ghost hospital. Växjö’s first school was established in the 14th century, Växjö katedralskola. Gymnasium status was granted in 1643.

Under the guidance of the union-hostile bishop Ingemar Pederson, the peasantry joined forces with the mountain men and peasantry of Dalarna, Hälsingland, and Gästrikland, who urged fidelity to Gustav Eriksson at the beginning of Gustav Eriksson’s liberation war. From the summer of 1542 to after New Year 1543, the city was under the authority of Nils Dacke and his supporters during the Dacke War.

There were numerous fires in the city during the Northern Wars and the Scanian Wars, as well as afterward (in 1277, 1516, 1570, 1612, 1658, 1690, 1749, 1753, 1799, 1838, and 1843). Växjö received its current street plan after the last fire in 1843, which left 1,140 citizens homeless.
