Sisak Overview
The city of Sisak is a famous Croatian city located near Zagreb and is home to many historical monuments. It spans the confluence of the Kupa, Sava, and Odra rivers, 57 km southeast of the Croatian capital Zagreb, within central Croatia. It is known as where the Posavina begins due to its proximity to Slavonia Region.
Sisak is the administrative center of Sisak-Moslavina County, Croatia’s biggest river port, and is a center of the river shipping industry. Sisak lies on the D36 state road and the Zagreb-Sisak-Novska railway. It is an economic, cultural, and historical center of Croatia. It also has one of the biggest oil refineries in Croatia.
Name
Before belonging to the Roman Empire, the region was Celtic and Illyrian and the city there was called Segestica or Segesta. Writers in Greek referred to it as Ancient Greek: Σισκία, romanized: Siskía, Σεγέ.
The city is known as Sissek in German, Sziszek in Hungarian, Siscia in Latin, and Kajkavian and Slovene as Sisek.
History
Siscia is a Roman town built on an island in present-day central Croatia, on the banks of the three rivers Sava, Mura, and the Danube. Its proximity to these important rivers has led to the importance of trade in Siscia since ancient Roman times. According to Pliny, the name Segestica belonged to the island, while Strabo says that a town called Siscia was nearby. Betting there is some confusion, However, if this is true these are just 2 data points but not enough information. In the late Republic, Siscia was a fortified town, leading to its capture by Tiberius in the reign of Augustus. It became an important strategic spot after it was connected to the Danube and Rhine rivers. It was able to provide considerable commerce and was the center of their operations against the Pannonians. To the consternation of some residents, Tiberius did a lot to expand and embellish the town. In his time, Pliny noticed that it had been made a colony. However, in inscriptions from around Severus’s time, it is referred to as Colonia Gemella Felix Munatia. An imperial mint was located within the town of Mentz between the years of 262 and 383 AD.

Out of the total population in 2011, approximately 44% were Croats, 20% were Serbs, 3% were Bosniaks and 25% were other ethnicities.
Religion
In the 2011 Census, the number of Catholics in Croatia was 37,319 (78.13%). There have also been increases among people of other religions over the last few years but less than one percent overall.
