Bjelovar Overview
Bjelovar is situated in the center of Croatia. It is also called the administrative center of Bjelovar-Bilogora County. At the census in 2011, there were 40276 inhabitants, 91.25% of which were Croatian.
Bjelovar is a city in Central Croatia, situated on the banks of the Kupa River. It gained importance as a defensive point against the Ottoman invasion. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria ordered two forts to be constructed in the city to ensure it could keep invaders at bay. Before 1874, the town had to wait until the wars ended for it to be announced as a free royal town by ban Ivan Mažuranić.
History
The oldest Neolithic settlement in this area is Ždralovi, a nearby suburb of Bjelovar. Here, while building a basement for the house of Josip Horvatić, there was found an ancient dugout identified as belonging to the Starčevo culture (5000-4300BC). Ždralovi findings are of a regional subtype of the late variety of Starčevo culture or the last stage. There are also remnants of Korenovo and Sopot cultures as well as Lasi artifacts.
After the end of Ottoman rule in the area, Bjelovar was part of Austria’s Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia after the 1867 Compromise. It was then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Warasdin Kreutzer Regiment №V under military administration.
Bjelovar was the town/city/municipality’s seat in the Croatia-Slavonian Kingdom from 1868 to 1918. From 1929-1941, Bjelovar was part of the Sava Banovina within the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. And from 1941-1945, it was in the Banovina of Croatia among other parts of Yugoslavia.

Geography
The city of Bjelovar is in northern Croatia, on a plateau in the south. It’s the capital of the county and where people go to do all their shopping, banking, and leisure activities.
Bjelovar is at an intersection of roads in the area, with two main highways (D28 and D43) and a connection to Zagreb on the way. It’s also close to major towns such as Podravina and Osijek. The highway between Bjelovar and Zagreb has been recently modernized with dual carriageways.
The city of Bjelovar is 181.75 km2 (70.2 sq mi) and includes 31 other areas. North-east of Bjelovar, there is a long, low elevation called Bilogora which has an average height of 150–200 meters (highest point: Rajčevica at 309 m). The geology of the region is Pliocene sandy marl and sandstones. There are also smaller amounts of lignite and there is no older rock on the surface. In deep boreholes, there are also crystalline rocks.
Climate
Bjelovar’s climate is temperate continental. Winters are moderately cold and summers are mild. Precipitation of around 900mm per year is normal. The wind during winter is predominantly northerly; this changes as the year progresses, with spring seeing stronger easterlies. During summer it’s southerly and often hot. Culture
In Bjelovar you can find 3 war memorials. The Barutana memorial area is dedicated to those who defended the city on September 29, 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence and died. The Lug memorial area pays tribute to Ustashi soldiers who were killed by Partisans in 1945 and the Borik memorial area is a commemoration of the Partisans killed during the Second World War. Bjelovar hosts the yearly “BOK” theatre festival. It was founded and is run by local actor Goran Navojec, and it hosts a selection of the best plays performed in Croatia during previous years.
The Bjelovar Synagogue has been converted from a former synagogue into a cultural center to preserve its legacy.
Sport
In the ’70s Bjelovar was known as the European handball capital. The RK Bjelovar team from that period exclusively consisted of players from Bjelovar and its surroundings.
